If you guys remember, I did a similar thread for Hairspray and Dreamgirls, just to try to curb the ridiculous number of new threads we get about box office info on the boards. So starting ASAP, pretty much everything about Sweeney at the box office will be here on this first post, which I'll update as often as I can.

Thanks!

Also, remember people that Sweeney is only being released nationally on about 1,250 screens, which while a lot, is still only about half of what normal big studio movies open in.

So, this weekend's gross won't be too staggering, though, if it does indeed do well this weekend (say between $8 and $12 million), more markets will start showing it next weekend.

Isn't there also an entire chain in the midwest not showing the film, because they couldn't reach an agreement with the studio on money?

Not that this will be helpful at all, but I just got back from a 10:00 am show and there were 15 people there at 6 bucks a pop. So we have $90.

There are quite a few high profile movies opening this weekend. I doubt Sweeney will reach the top 5.

There were three midnight showings here in Tucson. One was sold out for sure; my friends couldn't get tickets more than a day in advance. the one I went to was almost completely full also and these are large theatres. I'm interested to see how it does.

Cheers,

Johnny Depp's presence alone will be enough to put this in the Top 5. Throw in Tim Burton and almost universal acclaim and it's a pretty safe bet.

Then again, this is unlike any movie that I've EVER seen. Frankly I have no idea how this is going to do.

I just went to the movie theatre to get tickets to a late night show of Sweeney and it was sold out. And that's a 10:40 show. They said they had a few more seats left at the 7:50, so I got those.
I knew it was going to do well, but I really wasn't thinking that it was going to do SELL OUT status.

I think it's hard to see this movie doing blockbuster numbers right out of the gate. Hard to see folks flocking to a slasher musical the weekend before xmas.

A friend of mine has just seen the movie at the Metreon in San Farncisco at the 2.30pm Fri showing. Seats were not available for later showings!! The theatre at 2.30pm was 60/70% full and the audience applauded the credits at the end.

It's opening against NATIONAL TREASURE 2 (dumb but probably will open big) and remember I AM LEGEND is still going strong. Hopefully, it will land at number 3.
I saw the first matinee at noon today and I thought I was going to be the only person in the movie theatre (most people are gone for the holidays, plus it's a musical and an early matinee) and it was half full which for the college town where I live is a big deal. I hope it does well.

I attended a 5:20 p.m. showing at the local theatre and it was less than half full. I imagine this was because pople were getting out of work just prior to that. This evening performances will probably do much better.

I saw it at 1:15pm and there were about 20 people in there (including myself and my sister).

National Treasure on the other hand was selling like hot cakes (or meat pies as it were)

National Treasure is a movie that will do well for teenagers, pre-teens etc. SWEENEY's primary business will be Friday and Saturday night. It's rated R which means most people who can get in to see it are working during the day.

I think you forgot to consider "Alvin."

You're about Alvin, aside from The Golden Compass (which bombed) it's the only movie out right now that is highly family friendly. I'm going to make a slight adjustment.

Yeah I was at the movies today (seeing ATONEMENT) and the theatre was full of young kids seeing ALVIN.

Comingsoon.net has rather odd predictions. I wouldn't think WALK HARD would be so far down, nor ALVIN so far up. I don't think comingsoon's predictions are often accurate.

1. National Treasure: Book of Secrets $45.8 million

2. I Am Legend - $33.8 million

3. Alvin and the Chipmunks - $24.8 million

4. Sweeney Todd - $14.6 million

5. Charlie Wilson's War - $10.8 million

6. Walk Hard - $9.4 million

7. P.S. I Love You - $8.1 million

8. The Golden Compass - $4.3 million

9. Enchanted (Walt Disney) - $3.3 million

10. Juno (Fox Searchlight) - $3.0 million

Hey Guys -

I caught the 3:05pm showing at a local multiplex, and let me tell you, there was a good 20-someodd in there with me, and people kinda filtered in throughout the picture.

By the by, after the fade-out into the closing credits, I. couldn't. even. breathe. I can't even DESCRIBE how incredible the experience was for me. It's a rarity all in itself to be able to go to the a movie theatre, and when I do, I enjoy myeslf, but geeeeez... This tops it for me. BIG-TIME! Scores upon scores of thanks to Tim Burton and the bunch! re: The Sweeney Todd Box Office Tracking thread

I went to the 12:01 showing last night and there was around 80 people in the room. Pretty good turn out for a bigger theatre also showing National Treasure 2

Early estimates are coming in that Sweeney did a pretty decent $3,950,000 on Friday, good considering the size of its theater count. It's number 4 on this very crowded weekend so far, behind National Treasure 2, I am Legend, and (uggh) Alvin and the Chipmunks, but it's ahead of every other new release.

Keep in mind these are rough numbers and will change. Updated On: 12/22/07 at 07:42 AM

Here is something to keep in mind when looking at Sweeney's weekend totals compared to the other films in "wide release."

It ranks ninth on the list of number of total screens showing the movie, with a count of 1,249 movie screens. "P.S. I Love You" ranks #8, just one ahead of Sweeney with DOUBLE the number of screens at 2,454. And "National Treasure 2" ranks #1 with 3,832 screens.

Here's the list of top ten movies by screen count:

1 National Treasure: Book of Secrets Buena Vista 3,832
2 I Am Legend Warner Bros. 3,620
3 Alvin and the Chipmunks Fox 3,499
4 The Golden Compass New Line 2,953
5 Enchanted Buena Vista 2,752
6 Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Sony / Columbia 2,650
7 Charlie Wilson's War Universal 2,575
8 P.S. I Love You Warner Bros. 2,454
9 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Paramount (DreamWorks) 1,249
10 The Perfect Holiday Yari Film Group 1,247
