"RENT" the movie..here we go again

O.K., so it wasn't the greatest musical movie ever made...let it go...I still find myself watching certain scenes just to get my RENT fix...It still gives me chills and makes me cry. The opening song, the life support meetings, Angels funeral...if those don't get you, you might want to check your pulse...

well good, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't condemn people who love it just as I shouldn't be condemned for not loving it. I mean, its still rent so the music is still good even if its been completely altered to sound "modern" or whatever, but hey, the lyrics, the meaning, its still there. I just prefer the show. By a lot.

That was a good one..maybe I deserved it...I've made my living the past 25 years as a songwriter...sometimes I have to look for inspiration..Jonathan Larson's music inspires me. Maybe I should just listen to the original soundtrack. I have seen Rent on Broadway about once a year for the past ten years..I didn't know Jonathan, but I can't imagine any songwriter not being proud to see their work on the big screen.

Rent sucked. Live with it. I wasn't happy about it either, but I'm not going to act like that piece of **** even came close on film to the experience in the theatre. I went to see the movie in sneak preview filled with people buzzing with excitement. By the time the movie was over all the air had been sucked out of theatre. People just walked out sort of shrugging.

I like a the beginning (when they are about to bring the movie to a screeching halt before it even starts by singing "Seasons of Love") because right before they start singing Tracy Thoms's eyes are darting all around like she's on ecstasy.

Ok. Some people loved it. Some people hated it. Some people couldn't care less. No matter how many threads are started about it (and there seem to be a lot of those lately) those who love it will continue to love it, those who hate it will continue to hate it, and those who couldn't care less will continue to ignore these postings.

Now can we all please move on with our lives?! It's been 2 years!

Every time I watch that awkward proposal scene between Maureen and Joanne right after Mark signs with Buzzline, I love watching Joanne deliver that monologue to Maureen. Not because it's particularly wonderful or memorable, but because her eyes are darting back and forth faster than anything I've ever seen. Those things are going a mile a minute.

Some musicals do not translate well to movies. This was probably one of them, but it was still worth making and some scenes are very good. I don't ever want to see the death of movie musicals. Even in the heyday of MGM musicals, not all of them were hits.

I loved it and before seeing the movie I had NO interest in Rent and now I love it so the movie made at least one person into a renthead and I am happy about it

When they film it as is, the movie going public doesn't want to see it. There's not enough Broadway diehards out there to make a movie financially successful. It has to appeal to the masses (unfortunately). Examples, Sweeny Todd....the buzz on this has mainly to do with Johnny Depp. Do you think that Michael Cervaris and Patti LaPone would be getting this sort of pre-release publicity? It's all about the almighty buck and its sad. But filming the Broadway show doesn't work either, Producers anyone?

i wouldn't have hated it nearly as much if columbus had left the latter third alone and lef the songs in tact. Oh and that scene on the cliff in the desert. That one was pretty ****ty.

But then again, the film started to go wrong earlier than that. I knew it was doomed during Take me Or Leave Me when Idina and Tracie were standing opposite each other on either sides of the pool table the camera shoots through their arms. That was one of the worst camera shots in the history of camera shots.

I knew I was in for trouble when Collins tries to escape from a bunch of muggers by running INTO a dark alley.

Easily the single stupidest moment in recent movie history.

The film was a well put together film and had some great performances especially from Dawson.

It wasnt well received in the states but a lot of the UK critics here really liked it

I don't think it was well put together at all. It slowed down any momentum the stage show had by stretching what took place in one evening over three days. Between musical numbers, there was suprisingly little music. And over half the score was cut and it was still so long.

Half of Out Tonight happens with Mimi walking down the street bundled up. Mark and Roger are both singing the title song before Roger has even seen the eviction notice. The gay marriage nonsense. The list goes on and on.

People may love it, but it's not a good movie.

You have to adapt things to a film audience (like Dreamgirls or Chicago) which means things need to be cut to cross over.

I thought the choices Columbus made were very good.

I just think some people saw a different version and freaked

No, we freaked because it was crap. It's not like there are a handful of stage show purists who are calling it crap, pretty much the world agreed that it was crap. It got mediocre to terrible reviews, tanked at the box office and has pretty much disappeared from sight.

And Dreamgirls DID suffer from some of its excessive cutting and inexplicable rewriting, but as a whole it's a much much better film.

When the movie first came out I loved it. Now, two years and two visits to the Nederlander later, I can truly appreciate how bad this movie is.

Very little works on screen,
The book is just awful, all of the dialogue is actually bad enough to make me cringe.
Angel hears coughing, of all things, in a dark alleyway and decides she neesd to investigate? Come on...
Roger and Mark are freezing in the loft so they burn their trash for the sole purpose of tossing it into the street.
April dies of AIDS, instead of suidice (which would have been a much better excuse for Roger to come across as such a whiny bitch IMO)
The mooing did not work at all.
There's no need to go into What You Own.

But the worst mistake I think Columbus made was cutting the last 2/3 of Goodbye Love. They're all in the graveyard, and everyone's sad and boohoo, and then suddenly Roger's off driving in the desert? There was really no context as to why he left, and why he decided to go there. Cutting that and Halloween also dramatically reduced Mark's character. Without those scenes, he is still just the narrator. He's completely one-dimensional.

Despite the overwhelming amount of flaws, I do enjoy watching the film. It's nice to see most of the original cast together, even if they're much too old for their roles. This film is what introduced me to the rest of musical theater, and it will always hold a special place in my heart (aww...)
