Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike... winners of multiple awards... yet for some reason, you just can't stand these shows, no matter how smart or well loved they are. You often have to keep your dislike (dare I say hatred) of these shows in the closet, because people think you are crazy when you confess your true feelings. Maybe a friend has even said to you, "Hey, you like theatre... want to go see ________ with me?" And you either have to make some excuse as to why you can't go or delicately explain how a musical theatre lover can hate one the most beloved musicals of all time. I'm not talking about shows like Wicked or Phantom, which have plenty of lovers and haters. I mean shows that are widely accepted as classics. So, let's come out of the closet. It'll be interesting to hear what people say.
I confess that I dislike the following: A Chorus Line, The Sound of Music, The Music Man.
We can even do the opposite... I know The Pirate Queen is just terrible, but I secretly enjoy listening to it. Shhh.

The Light in the Piazza.

Well... not "can't stand." More like "just don't like."

Your subject header and message are a little conflicting. re: Highly acclaimed shows that you just don't like...

I didn't really care for The Producers and I don't really like My Fair Lady either.

LES MISERABLES.

Attempted to sit thru that mess 4 times. Left at intermission every single time. Comped seats, hence the leaving at intermission bit.

Piazza, actually I didn't see it before I got the recording. I went to sleep listening to the recording. Saw the first 20 minutes on PBS then changed the channel.

You said, not like Phantom? That was an odd exclusion.

I didn't want to see Phantom or Les Miz because of their stories and they have been done and re-done so many times. I rather see Avenue Q, which had brilliant singing and acting though the dialog made me keep rolling my eyes in wonder. Wondering if I just stepped back into an eighties way of thinking. It was at least something new and artistically imaginative.

Though a few favorites could probably lure me back to the Theatre because I have always enjoyed the stories to begin with, like Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid(okay for once, I am hoping the tour will be an improvement on Broadway, that's a first for me), Pygmalion would be nice and a good version of the King and I or West Side Story might be something to get excited about.

I think some go for the singing, the acting, the sets, the story. If you have a preference and one of those elements are missing, making you want to shoot yourself or someone else, I just feel it is best to avoid putting yourself under such dangerous circumstances once you are old enough to recognize these facts.

My list :

1. Wicked - cant stand it at all ! too pretentious & preachy
2. Les Miserables - can't stand that rotating stage and all the songs..
3. Spring Awakening- so overrated... and that girl Wendla ..why is she showing her boobies?

"HAAAAAAAATED IT!!!!!"

The Light in the Piazza. I've tried to get into the recording, but it does nothing for me.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
