I'm really bummed Maria Friedman didn't get a nod, at least... I was really hoping for that. However, I am THRILLED that Elisabeth Withers-Mendes got a nod! I will have my fingers crossed soooo tightly for her!

I'm pretty satisfied w/ all the nominees except for John Slattery being left out. But I think everyone nominated is very deserving so best of luck to all of them!
ROCK ON MANOOOOOOOO!!!!

Im so glad they didnt snub Mano! Im confused by the technical nominees though. Lestat for costumes but not for lighting? Being a fan of this show, the reason I liked it so much was its lighting. I actually didnt care to much for the costumes they didnt stand out for me. I think that Lesat was a lock for its brilliant lighting and im just rather mad/confused towards its costume nominee.
Also (once again a Lestat/Hugh Panaro loving bias) but why is not nominated but Carolee Carmello is. Yes her perfromance is good but he never leaves the stage! He has such a demanding role and yet Stepen Lynch gets the noination instead (asuming all 4 others were locks). Panaro would not have won (Cerveris will) but he at least deserves recognition after all hes done!
finally, wherre is Cyndi Laupers name? I cant find it on the list. Is my computer making the mistake? No, no I think its the tony comitee yet again. Cyndi Lauper is making her debut in a brilliant performance and she has no nomination. Now the Threepenny nominee for actors is Jim Dale. No leads, but thats fine. Give her that award! If Carmelo can get a nomination and not Panaro, Why cant Lauper get a nomination without Cumming? She deserves that award and is brilliant in that show!
Im done venting for now!

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Brandon Victor Dixon get a nomination. He is wonderful in The Color Purple and I'm glad he's getting some recognition.
I'm disappointed that Brian F. O'Byrne didn't get a nod, and I really feel like Zeljko Ivanek belonged in the Featured Actor category.
I am also surprised to see no Choreography nomination for Jersey Boys.

"I hate the stupid notion of people from the same shows "cancelling each other out." That's stupid. It's impossible. If they both recieve an extraordinary amount of votes, one will always be greater than the other, and, if they're tied, they will both win."
Actually, cancelling out, in this case, refers to the idea that many voters could potentially be torn between which actor to check on their ballot. If two actors from the same show are deserving, a voter could just vote for someone else to avoid making the decision.
I'm really suprised Three Days of Rain just got snubbed. I would think they would want Julia there to announce awards, etc. But I'm sooooo happy Wedding Singer got a nomination. Now they will be performing!
I am happy to see that Elisabeth Withers-Mendes and Brenda Russell were nominated. Loved Ms Withers-Mendes' performance and I have listened to Brenda Russells music for years. Congrats to them both. From what I am hearing, Chaperone may have Best Musical sown up (I see it on June 9th.) but I am pulling for the Color Purple. I really enjoyed the show even with its few flaws. And I love the music. I have no desire to see Jersey Boys but I am told, in my friends' opinions who have seen it, it is also a very hot contender. Can't wait to see who wins!! I will be there!
The more I browse the nominees, the more upset I become.
I am shocked (not upset, however) that SHINING CITY took the slot over WELL. Maybe enough people just didn't see it.
I'm glad Chita was nominated. I mean, we all show she shouldn't even be eligible in the category - but now that she is - it makes sense to include her. I thought Maria Friedman was good - no where near brilliant - but I found everything about THE WOMAN IN WHITE, including her, to be unforgivingly forgettable.

Overall, considering the incredibly poor quality of many of the new musicals, these nominations are pretty strong. A couple of my personal favorites were left out, but I expected that. Sweeney not getting a lighting nomination is a bit disapointing. Otherwise the nominations seem strong and quite close to what I expected. There are also MANY categories were the race is tight, it should make for an interesting ceremony.
The Chita nom is a wasted nom. Best Actress for playing herself in a flimsy biopic. Hell Miss Lena Horne, a far better performer and actress than Rivera, deserved to be nominated and win a competitive Tony than a mere honorary Tony.
Cynthia is the only acting lock. La Chanze could win as the token Tony for COLOR PURPLE. JERSEY will win the Best Musical Tony and will share the musical spotlight with THE DROWSY MEDIOCRE CHAPERONE and TEENEY TODD.
Viva Harold Prince! Maybe Sondheim and Cook will present?
Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?
Overall I am OK with these nominations. The only category I am slightly upset about is the Featured Actor in a Play category. I would have liked to see both Jamie Parker and Dominic Cooper for History Boys over the two from Awake and Sing!. Oh well. Hopefully Samuel Barnnett will take it home. -BJH
Totally agree, bjh. I figured there was no chance for Parker, but I Schreiber wasn't even really on my radar for the award. Has he really been in the running for anything else this season? When the got to McDiarmid and two slots left I was thinking "Ruffalo and who else???"..and even though I love Ruffalo in general and thought he did a great job in Awake and Sing, I'm even kind of iffy on him. What was up with his Boston accent?!?!? Are they not in the Bronx?! He's got a wicked strong Bahsten accent in Awake and Sing.
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)
I am happy that Alison Pill got nominated for best featured actress in a play. I have said before, that I have seen/heard some of her TV work and I think she is a pretty good actress.
I was also thrilled to see to see Alison Pill nominated for featured actress. I've only seen her twice before (Pieces of April and The Distance from here) and I wasn't overly impressed with either performance (I thought she was just ok in TDFH, and I thought went a bit overboard with PoA...sure she was supposed to be obnoxious, but come on!) I did think she was wonderful in Inishmore though! So good for her!! I was thrilled to see Gleeson make the cut for featured actor as well.
Hopefully these nominations will give the show a bit of a boost at the box office. I went again on Friday, and while I believe they had the balcony closed, the orchestra and the mezz appeared to be sold out. Hopefully their weeks at 34% will be a thing of the past.

I don't think that the notion of actors in the same show "cancelling each other out" is ridiculous. After all, that's exactly what happened in the case of Philip Seymour and John C. being nominated opposite each other for True West.
"You've gotta have a swine to show you where the truffles are."
I go back and forth on it. There are certainly cases, like PSH/JCR where you could point to them essentially cancelling each other out (they were alternating the same role, for goodness sakes!). And there are definitely other cases were there are multiple nominees from the same show, in the same category where one wins (Idina/Kristin, the four ladies from Nine a couple years ago, I think 3 featured actor nominees for The Producers). But, I couldn't help but say, hmmm, maybe this'll boost Samuel Barnett's chances when Cooper didn't end up in the mix.

Excellent lists this year and a nice shock to see Carmello nominated. She certainly injected life into Lestat (and Hugh did as well but seeing how he wasn't nominated, I see this show closing very soon). I am also disappointed to not see Jonathan Pyrce nominated for his tour de force in DRS but WRQ has already explained why he could not be nominated. Still, that is no excuse for Meghan Hilty to be snubbed.
Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)
You have to be contracted for a minimum of 6 months, and even though Pryce was for 7 months, the committee for some odd reason did not create a category this time.
