#0Vote for the 100 Best Showtunes
Posted: 7/1/05 at 2:50pm

Hey Musical Theater Fans,

Now is your chance to help in compiling a list of the 100 Greatest Showtunes! The following is a list of 375 songs that have made a mark upon the great white way at one time or another over the past century. To be included, the song had to appear in a show that had opened on Broadway at some time between 1900 and the present. Any songs that had originally appeared in a movie or a medium other than Broadway were not included.

VOTE FOR AS MANY AS YOU WOULD LIKE and feel free to include your favorite if it has been left off the list--but remember, it must have originally appeared on Broadway (songs from shows that opened Off-Broadway, in London, or in Regional Theater and transferred are admissable)

I'm running this poll on the boards of a couple different sites to get as many responses as possible. Depending on how many votes are posted, I'm looking to compile a list of the Top 50 or Top 100. Voting will end on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at midnight EST.

The songs are organized by decade, by year, and by show. The decade with the most songs is the 1960s with 72. The show with the most songs on the list is Les Miserables with 13.

Go vote! Post your responses on this thread. Thanks!

How about we compile a list of the "100 Greatest Show Tunes" that didn't make the list?

"Once in Love with Amy" Where's Charley

"Losing My Mind" Follies

"Now While I'm Around" Sweeney Todd

That's the first three that come to mind....

As the message states, if there is a song NOT ON THE LIST that you would like to vote for, go ahead and do so. THE LIST IS MERELY A SUGGESTION. I'm sure there's plenty of great songs that have been left off.

I agree Elizabeth_Debris. I seems a bit too biased for my tastes. If we can choose what we want, why does there have to be a list to choose from?

Whups. Uh... so people know what Bobby's talking about, my message before I edited it said something to the effect of that the list lacks historical perspective, and there are far too many songs listed from current shows, and when there's only one song listed from "Sunday in the Park With George" and two from "Company..." it's just a little upsetting.

i don't think joseph could be considered 80s broadway, as it was written in the the late 60s. Since when was Benjamin Calypso a great showtune anyway?!?!?
