"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Extremely odd for just 6 performances. Assuming this will be non-union?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
I had never heard of Aliante Casino before. It's a Binions' property far off-strip in North Las Vegas. More of a "locals casino." They must have got a deal renting their show room.
Legitimate theatre is such a unusual thing to find in LV.
No! People are burying the lede of the cast. But the website doesn't say who plays who. There are a number of "recognizable-to-theatre-people" and "has-been" names involved, including...
- Frederica von Stade (assuming she's Heidi? - Ruby Lewis (she's listed as one of the top four principal performers but seems way too young for Phyllis or Sally) - Randal Keith - Bubba Knight - Pete Barbutti - Nicolas King - Clint Holmes - Seth Sikes - 12 retired Vegas showgirls, including Anna Bailey "the very first African American Showgirl on the Strip...now a young and spry 96 years old." - a 26-piece orchestra ...and... Ted Chapin (maybe he's Weissmann? or Theo Whittman?)
Some of these bios are absolutely ridiculous and so full of hyperbole. Which is usually a sign of people who (a) never had "it", or, (b) haven't had "it" since the Reagan administration.
The director, David James Robinson, claims to have been a close friend to Sondheim, though his bio lists no notable theatre productions.
There is a self-referential quality to getting actual retired Vegas showgirls to play these parts that is exciting to me. Unfortunately you could not pay me to go to Vegas.
I had never heard of the Aliante casino before. It's a Binion's property, quite far from the Strip in the northern part of Las Vegas. It's more like a 'local casino.' They probably arranged to rent out their showroom for the show.
I also want to add that I only recently found out about Skrill Casinos. In reality, there is still much out there that we do not yet know
Legitimate theater is such an unusual thing to find in Las Vegas."
I remember reading about this when it was first announced. Very excited to see this show.
In regards to many of the cast members having "older" credits, that doesn't mean that their talent and passion has gone away. They still did the work, and had the experience. One of the many themes of "Follies," is honoring the past. The cast has a fantastic, respected past.
