Not a great week for most shows, though good that a few of the new titles are climbing. I NEED THAT is shaping up to be Roundabout's highest-grossing show in years, assuming the numbers stay.

I don't expect much better a week from now, because tonight (Halloween) is a notoriously bad night for ticket sales on Broadway –– and Halloween Weekend festivities might have impacted this weekend's sales too.

Hard to say if these steep drops on certain shows are a sign of a new norm for their numbers, or merely a temporary thing. But there's a lot of shows hoping for big bumps at Thanksgiving into Christmas. Let's hope Miss Rona stays away this year.

Thoughts:

I can’t help thinking that SLIH, HLL and probably Shucked should cut their losses.  I suspect their expectation re the holiday week grosses are unrealistic.

I find it a little depressing that Lion King and Wicked are the top 2 grosses.

i find it mind-boggling that Merrily is #3, given the size of the theatre it is in.  The grosses clearly reflect peoples’ willingness to pay those prices, at least for now.

I really didn’t think Danny DeVito would sell many tickets.  I have no doubt that it’s grosses would be leas than half of what they are with someone only known to Broadway regulars.

i find it amazing that PVs grosses are up a little (in a week with a lot of sizable slips) but it is only filling less than 2/3 of its seats.

Keep it up, Purlie Victorious, indeed! Even if the capacity isn't creeping up, the gross certainly is and the average ticket price being over $100 is certainly reassuring. Seeing if it continues to grow or at least sustain remains to be seen and jury is out if it will actually finish the whole run, but I really like what I'm seeing.

Harmony is not off to the greatest start. Judging by how almost the entire rear mezzanine was empty on Friday, it's gonna need more than Manilow's name to sell this show (and there were many audience members who had the impression he was IN the show).

According to my sources close to the show, this is the week where Here Lies Love will determine how much longer it's going to push on for and/or if it will decide on a closing date

THE PRICE sold extremely well (though that also had Ruffalo and Shalhoub), and iirc his West Coast and London runs in THE SUNSHINE BOYS did big business. That was eyeing Broadway, but after Richard Griffiths died and Judd Hirsch didn't light up the stage in LA, I think it was put to rest.

He's a beloved cultural figure from millennials to older theatergoers, has become a meme to young people, he's been steadily working for 50 years, and he was GREAT in his previous Bway outing. He could command a lot of money in a commercial production but has chosen to do two plays at Roundabout, which is nice (and he spoke very fondly of Todd Haimes at the time of Todd's passing)

Maybe they need that line from the HELL'S KITCHEN/Public Theater website: *Please note that Alicia Keys is not in the production.

We've seen mixed sales from other celebrity-composers, though considering how much press Manilow & Sussman have been doing, I'm surprised the grosses aren't a little better out of the gate. It also doesn't help that the subject matter is much more serious than Manilow's stage persona + the songs don't sound like "classic" Barry songs.

I also don't know what to expect of reviews, especially if the NYT has a different critic re-review it (its Critics Pick is from Vincentelli).

SLIH and Shucked have closing dates, and Shucked is making well above their nut, even on down weeks.

Why would they cut their losses? They're making money, and Shucked at least is not closing because they're losing money.

Here Lies Love has a closing date that hasn’t been announced yet.

They are in talks with Spike Lee to film the show before it ends it Broadway run.

I would so love to see that happen! I think it would definitley be possible too. If you can film a sports game, you can film this.

Spike Lee is a superfan of the show and has apparently been spotted on the dance floor multiple times (and the cast post about it on Insta). This would not surprise me and I would honestly love it

It is astounding to me that Merrily is the only show consistently selling out - each of its last 6 weeks...in that same time, Hamilton can only boast of 2 100% weeks.  Now I realize that Hamilton, Lion King, and Wicked (and MJ?) have capacity in the high 90s, which is nothing to sneeze at.  

 

I wonder if they'll be able to push through another extention...which they might need to help solidify Tony recognition.

I was at Harmony for the Saturday matinee and the rear sides of the orchestra and the rear mezzanine were relatively empty. I thought that the show was okay, but nothing amazing.

Yes, I'm aware, but I'm sure they are waiting to get a certain percentage of tickets sold, before they do.

What's the "LOL" for? They're making well above their nut weekly.  

Tommy was supposed to go to the Lunt, and they can't because Sweeney extended, so Tommy was given the Nederlander and Shucked is closing.  But please... elaborate on that LOL.
