Dear Evan Hansen, the 2017 Tony winner for Best Musical, is scheduled to resume performances at Broadway's Music Box Theatre December 11, having been closed since March 2020 due to the pandemic.

At the time of its temporary closing, Jordan Fisher (Hamilton, Fox's Rent) was starring as Evan, the sensitive high school student caught at the center of a story that spirals out of control. The part was created by Ben Platt, who won a Tony for his performance and was succeeded by Noah Galvin, Taylor Trensch, and Andrew Barth Feldman.

Casting for the Broadway return will be announced at a later date.

Great to see the official announcement!  Though thanks to another thread some of us have known for a few days now and already have tickets securedsmiley

I just checked Telecharge and it's already almost sold out.

I noticed Rows A&B of the orchestra do not show at all so wondering if these rows will be empty as part of the safety protocol?  Has anyone else noticed this in other theaters that have shows re-opening?

Who does everyone thing Evan will be?  I'm hoping for Jordan but know his schedule is pretty jam packed but it would be great to see him make a return for a least a short initial run.  Also wonder if Rachel Bay Jones or any other former OBC will re-join?

So glad the show is coming back!

I thought it was smart of them to wait but I also thought they’d want to take advantage of Thanksgiving sales as those always sold out in the past.

I am so happy this is announced and I cannot wait to be there for the first show back.

The announcement video the show released hit me right in the feels and also features Jordan doing voiceover so I assume that's a good sign he'll be back.

OMG thanks for sharing this - what a beautiful video.  It brought chills and a definite tear or two to my eyes.  And definitely a good sign that JF did the voiceover.

Fisher may be a little too old to play Evan at this point, don't you think?

Still, glad this one is coming back. Clearly they will be counting on the film adaptation to get some positive buzz and generate some hype for the winter.

JF and BP are basically the same age, so if they can make BP look 17 (by the magic of film), they should be able to do somewhat of an equally fair job for JF right lol.  While ideally it would be better for someone actually younger, I do think they need someone like a JF for the initial run.

Jordan Fisher is also around two years younger than Taylor Trensch was when he played the role.

Does anyone think that since Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway is not resuming performances until December, and that capacity restrictions are allegedly going to be lifted in September, that the Dear Even Hansen movie premiere might be held at the Music Box?

Note the Dear Evan Hansen film is supposed to be released in theaters on September 24, 2021.

It would be a great PR move for both NYC and the Broadway community as a whole to show NYC is starting to reopen. The only person is might not benefit ironically is Ben Platt, who is clearly hoping this film adaptation gets him his an Oscar.

Since it hasn't started an ad campaign (let alone a single image), there's a fair chance the film is going to be held until 2022. In The Heights and West Side Story are big awards prospects and already campaigning hard.

Isn't Sept 24th also Ben Platt's birthday?

I'd be surprised if the film gets pushed back. As of now, Universal has very little on their fall/winter slate of releases. I did notice that the movie's Instagram page is live, although it doesn't have any posts yet.

Then that may just be a sign that a teaser could be coming our way soon...!

Confirmed today on GMA that Fisher will indeed reopen the show as Evan! In fact, the entire pre-shutdown cast performed this morning (indeed "a sight for sore eyes to see"DEAR EVAN HANSEN to resume performances on December 11, so 12/11-and-slightly-beyond ticket holders should be in luck.

OMG that's fantastic news!!!!   Loved the entire pre-shutdown cast.  I had just seen the show in late December 2019 (one of ABF's last performances).

The movie in September and Jordan in December - can't wait!!!

Why are they taking six months to re-open a show that needs maybe three weeks rehearsal to get everything up to pace again?

Maybe because they don't want to be one in a pack of 20+ other shows all opening at the same time??

Also, it's been suggested that they don't want to compete with or take attention away from the film, which comes out in September.

That makes sense as well but I believe Dear Evan Hansen in West End is reopening in late October.

It may also be Jordan Fisher's schedule.

That’s not really a fair comparison. Taylor Trensch is 32 now and he still looks 18 to me.
