Sad to hear of the passing, aged 87, of legendary restauranteur (and ex of Chita Rivera and Elaine Stritch) Joe Allen. His eponymous W 46th St eatery was/is the ultimate theatrical canteen (I could spend hours looking at the ‘Flop Wall&rsquoR.I.P. Joe Allen , as is the West End outpost. I also loved its sister establishments Orso and Bar Centrale, all located in the same brownstone which Mr Allen lived in the top level of. He’ll be missed. 2021 really has to start improving.....

Always enjoyed eating there, pretty average food but the atmosphere and service was always incredible. Orso is one of my favorite restaurants, I miss it dearly.  His memory will live on for a long time.

Rest in Peace.

Have only been once way back in 1989. It was a special trip to NYC with my then partner for our anniversary. Stayed at the Waldorf, saw Phantom and ate at Joe Allen. Had a planned night at Bar Centrale last year but the shutdown happened.

Just give the world Love.

When was he married to Stritch? I thought she was married once in the 70s to John Bay.

Although Joe Allen and Elaine Stritch were "romantically involved" for a period of time they were never married.

We ate at Bar Centrale 2 years ago after someone in line with us waiting to get into a show recommended it.  Food and service were good, and Joe showed up thru a back door that connected to his living quarters and had dinner at his table across from us.
