Just a completely random thought - what do you think is the possibility of the Broadway production not reopening until December being because they wanted to gauge public’s response to the film?

What are the chances of the show being retooled in some shape or form in the future? Would changes be implemented into high level productions or just for the licensing?

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

^I think it has more to do with Jordan Fisher’s schedule as he’s got other projects, but I could also see them wanting to not mix with the movie coming out. As I mentioned before, they’ve made a very clear distance between the movie and the show itself.

That was fast.

Yeah, I’m not paying $20 to watch it. That’s more than a first run movie ticket where I live. We have several second run movie houses that get films after they are no longer hot. It’s $2 a ticket. I’ll see it there.

Haven’t seen it on B’ way yet, but saw it streaming this weekend and LOVED IT! Better than I ever e pecked. Ben Platt was great in the role, and carried it off despite his age. Can’t wait to watch it again and finally see this on stage.

So, I've been in the UK for the last 2 months and the Dear Evan Hansen film just opened here (in a very limited release) so I just saw it.

One can argue if the show NEEDED to be made into a film, but having been made, I really can't imagine (apart from some quibbles) a better movie made from the original stage material.

And Platt looked totally age appropriate.

SPOILERS BELOW

I saw it today at the $2 movie house. Not as bad as expected. I found Platt quite good, but the hair, the makeup and the acting for stage not film were like a sore thumb at times and hurt the film. During much of his singing he was so big it was disconcerting.

Also he says it’s his own hair but I can’t see how that’s possible. I’ve never see such shiny, thick and plastic looking hair in my life. I think they were covering his hairline by pulling the curls forward.

The story overall is still troubling and the new end (stalking people Connor was in rehab with for information about him) is equally bizarre. As someone else said, footage of Connor in rehab would never exist and Evan casually chatting with what looks like a therapist of Connor’s is again bizarre. Not the best way to show he has better judgment.

It’s also strange how Amy Adams (who was exceptional and marvelous) has a bigger part than Julianne Moore. The parents roles and arcs are destroyed in this film.

Ya know I initially praised this change but much like the rest of Dear Evan Hansen when you take time to really think about it- yeah this is also very icky that he does that and it like the rest of the story is very contrived. Even though Connor's song was a sweet addition.

I think what would've been better is if some kind other person gave the family the video after Evan revealed the truth. Every time this story is trying to redeem Evan specifically it falls flat for me. I honestly just care about the Murphys being okay.

^ And what I still don’t understand is how the orchard was able to reopen after Evan told everyone the truth.

Because that's the purpose for the GoFundMe that was started by Alana.

While I agree with you can you imagine how that poor traumatized family would react if someone came out of the woodwork and said, “I knew Connor in rehab.” The Murphy’s would probably file a restraining order and assume the video was a deep fake. Their trust of others has to have take. A serious hit especially since not only were they betrayed, then they were vilified and harassed.

It’s very possible gofundme would have refunded all the donors since fraud was involved.

Again, I feel it is a shame that the Heidi’s arc was cut so badly and “Map” was cut. Amy Adams does really nice work in this film. I thought she was exquisite and it makes me think her Amanda in Menagerie will be out of this world.

As someone who loved the stage musical and saw it 3x, I think the movie suffers from terrible pacing and was, at times, outright boring. IMO the characters are more flat in the movie, so there really isn’t the same level of energy propelling the plot forward as on stage.

The stage version has a claustrophobic vibe, as well, which adds to the propulsion of anxiety. It kinda reminded me of Aronofsky's mother! in that regards, where there's no let-up for the audience, both in terms of plot and visuals. The film has the visual styling of a naturalistic YA dramedy, which I think sucks a lot of that nervousness out.

I agree Kringas. I kept thinking that this felt like an ABC Family Show.

I have never seen the stage show. It never looked like something I wanted to see. But the movie came out and seeing that was gonna be easier than seeing a show, so I rented this and now...I want to buy it. It was that good. Everything in the movie was perfect. Perfect starting song with a character I was perhaps a little annoyed at how whiny and weak he seemed, but then I felt sorry for him and was on his side. Absolutely fantastic opening song. I realized Ben Platt is a far better singer than I could ever hope to be and it wasn't just the song that was good but his voice. Colton Ryan was adorable as the troubled kid Evan gets involved with and I secretly wished there was a romance between them (and you almost feel their made up friendship could have been). Amy Adams was such a dear mother, I really liked her, except for one bit I'll get to later. Nik Dodani was, well, a character I didn't like because he was a mean friend to Evan. I didn't understand why he even talked to Evan if he didn't want to be associated with him. I liked Kaitlyn Dever. I liked Amandla Stenberg. But really, what was the best was the story, the songs, and Ben Platt's performance. I can see why he won the Tony for best leading actor in a musical, and hope he gets at least some nominations come awards season. I didn't cry, but towards the end when Evan starts really getting to know Connor by looking up stuff about him, and when Connor plays the guitar and his family sees, I did tear up. I didn't like that Connor's mom never stays close to Evan after some time after Evan apologized and later gives her that video, and I didn't get why Amy Adams would smile for a moment when she tells Evan she thinks he should go, but that was it. I can see why this musical won Best Musical and Best Score. Ben Platt did look too old sometimes as to distract me, but was not too old for me to lose myself in this movie, and I say all the critics saying the movie was bad are wrong. This film is a masterpiece. I hope I can buy it, because I heard they may not even release it on Blu-ray because it flopped so hard. The flashbacks to Evan in the tree, and the final flashback of it with the soaring song where we learn what he was really doing was genius. I had no idea the ending with the video of Connor's song was added. I loved that part, it made me tear up, as I said. Yes, I guess there would be no video at a rehab place, but a lot of movies have plot holes but are still good because the scenes with those plot holes are that good, enhance the movie that much, or make you that emotional, and you just get it. Same with the apple orchard plot hole. You could even say it for the entire movie since critics had a hard time accepting the main story. So, yeah, I loved it. It's a flawed masterpiece.

So this has ended up on a slew of Worst Movies of 2021 lists. Ouch. Entertainment Weekly's review was particularly interesting and really shown a light on the problems with the plot in the first place.
