Given the passion over Randy Rainbow's tweets from years ago I'm surprised that no one has brought up Bette Midler's tweets about Melania Trump from just a few days ago:
"She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!"
When she says "get that illegal alien off the stage" she is using the rhetoric of the right to make an ironic point.
ETA: she later clarified her meaning, "Just giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine. I guess they’re not keen." Call it clumsy if you want, but I find it pretty obvious that Bette doesn't believe that we should deport immigrants or shame non-English speakers, she's pointing out (like many have before her) the hypocrisy of the president's stance on immigration.
The subject line is misleading. The Tweets are not xenophobic, they are ironic. Now you can think they are not funny or effective, but no one in their right mind would think they are xenophobic.
