All signs are pointing to a COVID-19 decline in New York State at the moment. New cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths are all on a downward trend, and Governor Cuomo has planned the first phase of a region-by-region reopening, likely to start mid-May.

In terms of nonessential businesses, when do you think the city will be given the green light to start up venues like restaurants, salons, gyms, retailers, etc.? We already know construction and manufacturing will be the first sectors to reopen. I wouldn't be surprised if some city businesses will be operating on a limited scale by the end of the summer.

Every single NY region will be open weeks to months before New York City for very obvious reasons.

I live in Ithaca and (as of now) our stay at home order is supposedly ending on May 15th. (Which happens to me my birthday so let’s hope that really happens cause that would be a great birthday present to be able to actually safely leave my house...)

You can leave your house but I doubt it will be safely. This virus isn't going to just disappear the minute states start to reopen stuff.

Wait until NYC goes back to work and people get back.on the crime on wheels subway. Glad I do not have to go thru that anymore . Social distancing during rush hour should be fun

i think things will reopen but I think it will be a everyone wear masks and social distant sorta of thing. So not much more than we're doing now. I don't see it likely getting back to "normal" for months. I mean people are dying. And it's not a virus that we understand, which makes it scarier. So until we have a vaccination, I don't think things are going to be "normal."

In Queensland/Australia as from this Saturday 1st May, we can now go leisure shopping, buy food to take away and sit together, socially distant, in the park, Swim in the ocean, national park walks and drive no more than 50ks from home. This is a test for 2 weeks and then be re-evaluated. The other States are waiting to see how we go and then do what they think best.

I just hope that the hordes don't go crazy and rush the shops.

A lot more face masks are appearing. I did at the beginning and with gloves but now only use wipes when in public which is at least once a day and I am a high risk senior.

I miss sitting in a coffee shop filled with noise and people.

I don't think NYC will open till at least July. Mainly because of public transport. You can make the workplace as safe as possible, but it'll be impossible to enforce anything on the Subway.

The answer to the financial insecurity in this country is not to prematurely open it back up, but rather to adapt some sort of UBI, put a pause on ALL rent and mortgage payments, and make sure New Yorkers are able to get their unemployment.

California has outlined it's re-opening policy:

"And the Final Phase, Phase 4, will see the end of the stay-at-home order with the reopening of the "highest risk parts of our economy" being reopened, Newsom said on Twitter. That includes concerts, convention centers and sports with live crowds. Newsom said that stage would come only "once therapeutics have been developed."

That means in California at least, until there is a real way to treat the virus, there will be no live events with crowds. NYC is more dense and harder hit -- I'd imagine it will take even longer.

Yea with Broadway being closed through the end of June at least of course I wouldn’t be going to NYC any time around my birthday. Would just be nice to go out to dinner or something in my own town. Who knows what the time frame will be though. I haven’t heard any further updates as to whether or not stuff here is reopening in mid May or not.

Maine has a reopening plan in place through the end of August; live events are not included. Connecticut announced a plan yesterday, permitting limited restaurant and retail reopening starting 5/20 that, if all goes well for 4-6 weeks, could advance to other reopenings- but that the reopening process could take up to 10 months.

Upstate / rural New York will absolutely be the first to reopen. The city and surrounding area is the epicenter of the American pandemic- it is going to be a long time.

NYC will likely start reopening sometime in late May or early June, but it's not going to be Broadway and concerts and sporting events that open.  It's going to be more essential workers coming back to their offices (of course essential workers are already there but, I guess you could say, the tier just below them if that makes sense), parks gradually reopening, probably some restaurants and bars with extreme limitations on seating.  Depending on how the next few months go, we could possibly see some concerts and theatre and sporting events up and running in the fall.  But there are a lot of things that need to happen before that happens.

People in upstate and western New York have been paused until mid May, and they will slowly reopen things. They have barely any cases compared to downstate. NYC won't be reopening in May or June. In any capacity.

Should that be the case?  Probably.  But there's absolutely no way NYC is remaining completely shut down until end of June.  The pressure on the city to reopen is far too great from the folks who have been unemployed.  To clarify, I'm not at all saying Broadway is going to be up and running by the end of June.  I'm saying more restaurants and hair salons and other places like that are going to gradually start to reopen.  Again, not saying this is smart.  But it's foolish to think the city is going to remain locked down until this virus completely passes.  Provided we stay on the same trajectory of lessening deaths and new hospitalizations for the next 3-4 weeks, the reopening process is absolutely going to begin, whether that's right or wrong.

Considering he just shut the subway down for 4 hours every night (for the first time ever), and it will take weeks just to completely deal with all of that, you are incorrect. And the virus will never pass, it will here to stay like the flu. And any spike in numbers, they will have to start all over again. They don't want to do that. This isn't Georgia or Texas, we have competent people in charge who are very, very careful. He just closed schools for the remainder of the school year as well. So yeah, that is the case, even if you don't like it.

My apologies Sutton Ross, I was not aware you worked for the WHO and know exactly what is going to happen.  For the record, I said nothing about schools or large gatherings reopening.  I hope that you are correct, because we shouldn't reopen quickly.  I never said that.  What I said was, it's going to happen.  NYC is not going to sit around and wait for this entire pandemic to pass before it starts to reopen.  If you truly believe that's the case, I recommend you take a walk outside and see all the people already starting to crowd the streets with the nice weather we're now getting.  Should this be happening?  No.  But it's going to.  Sooner, not later.
