"It would be super awkward to have them in the audience--too many people would be watching them for their reactions rather than the play. If they didn't take up the offer of a private showing, I don't see it happening."
I agree and like I said in another post I was just curious since they both attend Broadway shows a bunch. It was nice of the producer to let them see script and offer them chance to see it at dress rehearsal.
Was there again last night. The audience was electric, it felt very much like a sporting event. Also, seeing Laurie again last night, it would not surprise me if she won again. She got basically a standing ovation when she made her first entrance, and at least four ovations during the show. She was on FIRE last night, especially during the “eclipse you” section. I also love the new ending much more than the one I saw in early previews.

Its an analysis of the forces that have held her down, and one of those forces is Bill. They'd be nuts to sit through it (though I'd bet money they've been given a script to read)."
Agreed. And while sympathetic, it's ultimately pretty tragic. It forces them into confrontations I'm sure they have never had all at one time and all shoved into one brutal fight. Nor does it have kind things to say about Bill's legacy.
Jean, for us plebeians who never took theater classes 20 years ago in college, please provide the meaning of the word "mugging" and provide examples of Metcalf mugging.
Also, you spelled Bette Davis' name wrong, so how can anyone take you seriously?
The Tony must go to Metcalf, not Jackson. At least people aren't snoring through Hillary and Clinton.
I didn't snore through this, but I just didn't care really. I went in really hoping for the best but this all just felt necessary. Metcalf of course is terrific. I really believe Elaine May needs this Tony though. Metcalf is great, but this is May's award to lose.
I saw this tonight - $40 rush around 2pm and I got front row center. When the settle rolled forward I was so excited.
I really enjoyed this. I'm not a politically minded person, but I just really enjoyed this portrait of a woman who just can't seem to catch a break, and I can kind of relate to it with the struggles of being an artist and no one quite connecting with you for one reason or another. I thought Metcalf was just phenomenal. I've seen most of her stage performances in NY and I thought this one was pretty up there. But it would be hard to beat May. She was really terrific. I thought Lithgow gave a great performance too. Did not care for Orth. Everyone else was so subtle, but man, he was overacting and gesturing every word and every moment and lots of pointing at himself when he said "me" which is like bad acting 101. Loved the design. Simple but effective.
