Am I the only one who's seen The Bands Visit and doesn't understand why Katrina would be considered leading, and even if so, why she would be a frontrunner to win?

I can see why she's a frontrunner now but with so many potentially strong female leading performances to come, I don't think she's a done deal at all.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but I'm curious. It looks like there are only going to be 3 potential nominees for Best Revival of a Musical this season (CarouselMy Fair Lady, and Once on This Island). Does this mean only 2 can possibly be nominated? Could all 3? I'd love a brief explanation of how the rules will work on this one.

Just to chime in here: I finally saw The Band's Visit and narrowing down who the strongest in the cast are is impossible. Katrina Lenk is amazing and Tony Shalhoub is wonderful as well, but everyone who'd be considered featured performers are also SO good.

I'm seeing people saying Ari'el Stachel could be recognized, but I really took to John Cariani's performance. He was my favorite of the evening - his comedic chops are top notch and his lullaby broke my heart. But the show is such a strong ensemble piece, I could really say that about anyone in the cast. I don't know how the voters are going to choose amongst them.

Based on current reviews, here are who I think will be nominated for Best Play:

The Children, Farinelli and the King, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Three Tall Women

I believe 1984 could've been nominated for Best Play if they were eligible.

And I feel like Home for the Holidays should get a Tony for it's "amazingness". IT DESERVES ONE! Way too early 2018 Tony Predictions Thread

I don't think Three Tall Women will be considered a new play, I suspect they'll put it in the revival category like Hedwig. It has already been nominated for the Pulitzer over 20 years ago, it's hardly new

I'm beyond baffled that the only original musicals of this season will be 2 jukebox, an meh adaptation of a cartoon and a boring adaptation of a Disney movie. Thank god for Band's Visit's e Mean Girls.

Can they nominate just 3 shows given the lack of new productions or will we have 4 nominees anyway?

Or am I missing any productions?

From the Tony Awards Website-Rules:

"Each year the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall determine whether there shall exist in quality and quantity a sufficient number of Revivals to merit the granting of an Award for Best Revival of a Play or Musical and, if so, the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall also determine whether there shall be a separate Play and Musical Revival category; provided, however, that if there are at least three such plays and three such musicals, there shall automatically be separate Play and Musical Revival categories.

"Where there are nine or more eligible shows in a Best Show category, at the Tony Nominating Meeting, the Nominating Committee will be instructed to cast one vote each for four eligible shows as nominees on his/her secret ballot. Such ballot shall be collected and tabulated by a representative of the Accounting Firm. The four eligible shows with the highest number of votes will automatically be designated as the nominees in such category. A fifth nominee shall be added to the category in the event that the Accounting Firm determines that the difference in votes between the fourth highest ranked show and the fifth highest ranked show is three votes or less."

"Where there are five or fewer eligible shows in a Best Show category, at the Tony Nominating Meeting, the Nominating Committee will be instructed to cast one vote each for three eligible shows as nominees on his/her secret ballot. Such ballot shall be collected and tabulated by a representative of the Accounting Firm. The three eligible shows with the highest number of votes will automatically be designated as the nominees in such category. A fourth nominee shall be added to the category in the event that the Accounting Firm determines that the difference in votes between the third highest-ranked show and the fourth highest-ranked show is three votes or less."

I think CAROUSEL and MY FAIR LADY will be wonderful, safe, beautifully designed revivals.  But they will have to be outrageously great to beat out the incredible, magical ONCE ON THIS ISLAND!

That's true. Just like how in the 2015-16 season, Dames at Sea was put in the revival category as it was already a well known musical and not a new one. Since there's a high chance of this occurring, I say either Lobby Hero (which I'm kind of doubting that it will do good) or Saint Joan (which sounds quite interesting, but not as interesting as Lobby Hero (in my opinion)) will be nominated for Best Play as they're the only new plays left on the list. I think Best Musical, Play and Play revival are locks for Band's Visit, Harry Potter and Angels in America. Musical Revival we still have to see as two have yet to open and both have very strong potential (Rudin behind Carousel and Lincoln Center behind My Fair Lady), but Once on this Island is most likely the only one that fully reinvents their original production. It will for sure be the most suspenseful category of the night.

How do you know that? And the award is not for going the opposite direction of the original.

I’m well aware, Blaxx. I was just stating something that could make it stand out from the rest. Yes, we don’t know for sure what the productions of Carousel and My Fair Lady will be, but I can infer based on each of the creative teams previous works, they will be beautiful and elegant revivals, but will be mostly by the book (nothing wrong with that, Dolly was the same and is fantastic).

Re: Tony rules

Am I completely missing something or do the rules only stipulate what happens when there are “nine or more” or “five or fewer” eligible shows?

I too found weird that there's a gap between five and nine lol

I guess only two nominees will be allowed in musical revival just like in 2011 with HTSIBWRTrying e Anything Goes.

Frozen and Mean Girls will get in, will Summer be a hit? Maybe can grab the fourth slot.

Im in the minority but I dont see Bands Visit being a lock. I think the voters would swing to a splashy new musical. But then again Bands visit is the best of the bunch.

The Band's Visit has Best Musical and Best Score pretty much on lock (and rightfully so, IMO).

Mean Girls, I think, is the only other contender that might grab Best Book from TBV if they've tightened things up between D.C. and opening.
