What was the point of the article. They announced that like 2 months ago.

As if the sidewalk in front of the theatre wasn't already way too crowded. Maybe future productions can hold the lottery in the mall below (if not digitally).

Basically, the Palace Theater as it exists is its own self-contained structure nested inside two larger exterior buildings. The space above the self-contained theater is empty until it hits the second/third exterior layers. The self-contained theater space can be moved very carefully as a unit so long as everything is kept level on the jacks. When it's high enough, they'll add in the new support structures and it will be perfectly stable.

The structure of the building is like matryoshka dolls. Just imagine that instead of using all five or six dolls, the Palace Theater building only uses three. The largest two dolls are the outside of the building, while the smallest doll is the Palace Theater. It's perfectly stable inside the other larger dolls and could be elevated inside the outer dolls with just a little padding on the bottom.

Now is The Palace Theatre it's own self contained structure, or is it BASICALLY it's own self contained structure?

It is all about the Benjamin's. Nothing is sacred anymore.

The Palace Theatre is self-contained within a layer of bricks and concrete. That's why this is probably the only theatre that could do something like this.

Hm that's really interesting. Still not sure I quite understand it. When you look up at the Palace you can see some sort of ugly buliding atop it. What is up t here?

It's a suites hotel.

i can't imagine why anyone would be against it. For our purposes, it basically just means an actual lobby, more restrooms probably, and a renovation. It's not like the entrance as it exists is any kind of beauty,

Question,

Was The Palace once a stand alone theatre, that has since been encased by other buildings? Is the old facade hiding somewhere under all of that??

New York theatres are so fascinating... There was a thread about lost theatres, or theatres in hiding... But what about still around theatres? How have they changed?

Better to raise than to raze.

Palace Theatre to be raised

The Palace was definitely its own building once, topped in part (much like the New Amsterdam) by a ~10 storey steel frame skyscraper.

It's fascinating to think that in this day and age a 100+ year old theatre can simply be moved about as if it were completely free-standing.

They're also moving the entrance around the corner to 47th St. This is actually one of my favorite parts of the project - because, I agree that stretch of 7th(Broadway) has become a sh*tshow.

Also - no one has mentioned bathrooms. More, and upgraded bathrooms!

I really dont see why it would be a negative. They aren't destroying anything and sounds like it'll only get better, so why all the fuss?
