Really obscure one . I actually saw this and as I recall it was mildly diverting

Smith - Don Murray - Played Off Broadway - Locale the imaginary Balinasia & Tenafly NJ (cannot get more exotic than that )

17 performances - Eden Theater .Grease followed this & Man Of La Mancha came after followed by Oh Calcutta.Theater now known as Village East Cinema. Score by Matt Dubey / Dean Fuller / Tony Hendra

The Sound of Music (Salzburg, Austria).
The Book of Mormon (second act in Africa and Hell).
Fiddler on the Roof (a Russian shtetl -- not exactly an exotic locale, but key to the story).
Les Miz (Paris). A whole BUNCH of musicals take place in France, in some cases in specific places, such as the Paris opera house, for POTO. However, Les Miz depends heavily on the place AND the particular period AND the specifics of French law and politics.

Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.

"Via Galactica" set on an asteroid probably has most exotic.

"The Little Mermaid" under the sea?

While it Is true that one of the hit songs is ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK for CHESS, the actual setting of the play is in Merano, somewhere in Italy

The King and I is the musical that is set in Thailand ( presumably in Bangkok).

@jo

Second Act opens in Bangkok. At least I recall that from the London production.

Act 2
A year later, Anatoly is set to defend his championship in Bangkok, Thailand ("Golden Bangkok"). Freddie is already there, chatting up locals and experiencing the Bangkok nightlife ("One Night in Bangkok");
