Most likely today was the last day as Gypsy of the Year begins tomorrow.

The 25th Annual BC/EFA GYPSY OF THE YEAR Tues. afternoon featured the best & brightest principals & singers/dancers ("gypsies") of current shows & tours, presenting original skits, songs & dances to celebrate the fundraising efforts of the last 6 wks & to compete for best presentation awards.

Hosted by Seth Rudetsky & his recordings at Lion King's Minskoff Theatre, this yr’s show included more than 250 performers. The opening # was TERRIFIC! with newboys & #'s from GYPSY w/new lyrics.

The shows that performed original numbers: After Midnight (a beautiful song/dance/reading) Avenue Q (Grand Hotel song w/new lyrics about their show running for 10 yrs.), Chicago (orig. dance), First Date (rap/skit), Kinky Boots (skit re: 3 co. members thinking they could go on for the lead,) The Lion King (dance featuring ropes/winner), Mamma Mia! (beautiful song), Newsies (dance/2nd place winner), Once (2 prod. assistants (skit /song), Pippin (3 min. ver. of their show), Spider-Man (song/dance) & Twelfth Night/Richard III (story reading by Stephen Fry.) There were also some revival presentations from previous seasons (How to Succeed 1st revival, Victor/Victoria, Beauty & the Beast), a dance co. # & a song/dance # assembled by the Road Companies.

Guest-hosts included Tyne Daly, Jonathan Hadary, Cherry Jones, Zachary Quinto, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart; Mark Rylance & Daniel Craig for just the last 60 seconds or so/reading the grand total of over 4.3 million which this yr bested last yrs figure.

Judges: dir/chor. Graciela Daniele, Mary Bridget Davies (Janis Joplin), Brandon Victor Dixon (Motown The Musical), Zachary Levi & Krysta Rodriguez (First Date), Rebecca Luker (Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella), Hugh Panaro (Phantom of the Opera) & Roger Rees (Winslow Boy).

Thank you for everyone's participation in this years event. It really is a very special labor of love. The Brits kept remarking about how they don't have anything like this over there - & that should be something that we can be very proud of.
