At this point, she's probably too old for the role. Maybe they could get Carey Mulligan? I could possibly see her in that role. Perhaps Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone. I know she can sing and it's not like you have to be a great singer if you're playing Sally.
Cast Amanda Seyfried it's not like Sally has to be a great singer and she's starred in two of the biggest and most successful movie musicals of the past decade. Plus she's played Linda Lovelace so she knows how to "do" slutty. WIN-WIN.
What I would LOVE would be, instead of a new movie, an HBO or Showtime original series incorporating the musical, "I Am A Camera," Isherwood's "Berlin Stories" and other historical fiction about this era and this location, with the musical numbers interspersed: probably a mixture of Kander and Ebb's stuff and genuine Berlin cabaret music.
Think Boardwalk Empire (the artsy tone, the frequent musical performances) meets Cabaret.
Natalie Portman or (and I'm sure ill be hater for suggesting her) Kiera Knightley as Sally. Even if they can't sing just dub them, I think they'd act the role perfectly
I’m stage managing my high school’s (yes high school’s) production of Cabaret this spring and I watched the Mendes revival from when it was filmed in London and it really is an amazing show.
Now that darquegk mentions it, I think with the same creative team, it could become an amazingly dark and gritty adaptation that I’d love to watch.
Natalie Portman would be sublime. As much as I enjoy the original movie, I would like a film closer to the stage show that depicts Sally as a mediocre singer.
How odd that we have thousands of posts complaining about Russell Crowe, yet here posters want a remake of CABARET just so they can hear Sally sung badly. (Yes, I understand the rationale and I find it overly literal. There's no reason to believe Madama Butterfly is a trained Italian opera singer, but that doesn't mean I want to hear her part sung by a non-singer.)
Well, nearly 15 years later (now that feels strange to be typing) most of us still treasure every second that Natasha Richardson was on stage as Sally, who was far from a great singer.
Or, as Forbidden Broadway put it: "What good is singing this classic again the same old Liza way?"
In the world of a typical musical, it is assumed a character can sing well, because it's the nature and language of the piece. But in the case of Cabaret, Sally Bowles is explicitly a second rate night club singer.
Carey Mulligan would be wonderful. Jennifer Lawrence is also an interesting choice.
Carey Mulligan would be a great choice, especially if GREAT GATSBY does well. Natalie Portman would be interesting, and Jennifer Lawrence would be fabulous too. Personally, if she could sing, I feel like this could be a great role for Mila Kunis.
Also, no to Emma Stone - I don't see Sally. However, she is my dream Charity Hope Valentine. How about they remake that? Cabaret is near perfect.
