"Bernadette Peters in GYPSY. Since when does Rose wheeze her way through "Rose's Turn"?"

Um..since Tyne Daly?

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Was Bernadette Peters MISCAST in FOLLIES, or did many people simply dislike the choices she made in the part?

Her "Betty Boop-isms" seem rather perfect for a character who is stuck in 1941.

Maybe somebody needs to define "miscasting." Actors can give bad performances without being miscast.

I'm sorry to use an example from film, but to me, a classic example of miscasting was William Hurt in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Yes, Hurt acted up a storm and got his Oscar. But nobody who looked like Hurt would have had Valentin's sad, lonely life; he would have been some rich man's boy toy instead.

Currently I have heard that Matthew Brodrick has been terribly miscast in the "Nice Work if you can Get it" -- People have said the show is great EXCEPT for him.

I wouldn't say Elena Roger was miscast in Evita. Polarizing yes, but miscast? I personally found her absaloutely thrilling.

Laura Linney in Les liaisons Dangereuses.

In fact, Roundabout gets it wrong a lot.

Look no further than Henry Goodman in The Producers. Even though he was a replacement, it killed the show and they eventually ended up with Tony Danza!!

Several people in the cast of State Fair.

Andrea McArdle - trying to belt the quiet ballad "It Might As Well Be Spring"

Donna McKechnie - a 50 year old seductress

John Davidson - a Las Vegas lounge singer posing as farmer

John Davidson is the first person to admit that he was miscast in STATE FAIR.

^ Funny, considering he was still playing the role as recently as five years ago regionally.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Hey, a guy's gotta eat.

And his residuals for "The Girl With Something Extra" ran out a long time ago.

I'll agree about McArdle, but because she couldnt act.

I guess McKechnie fits the bill because she was too old, but she was still wonderful.

I thought Davidson was charming in his role. Bing's wife, however, was perfectly dreadful.

I didn't include her because I can't remember anything about her performance. I remember people being turned off by her, but I just can't remember anything about the performance.

I was never a fan of the show... but "The Producers" never regained it's "uumph" after Lane and Brodrick left.
I think Brad Oscar took over for Lane, but no matter who assumed the roles - they were doomed by comparison.
The show relied too much on the Lane/Brodrick coupling and their "names" above title.

Also, the Grease revival in the 90's was ripe with mis-cast "names" as characters. Debbie Boone, Linda Blair, Jasmine Guy as Rizzo? Jon Secada, Rex Smith, Adrian Zmed as Danny? Heck, Rosie was hired to be a "name" above title... but her stint as Rizzo was the Broadway equivelant to nails on a chalkboard.

Oh, and therein lies another mis-casting. Rosie as the Cat in the Hat... Rosie as Golde... Rosie as... anything... Examples of miscasting that damaged a show

g.d.e.l.g.i. - I just met you, and this is crazy, but be my best friend - oh please, don't say maybe. I do not find Hunter talented, whatsoever, and yet EVERYONE I know for the most part loves him and thinks he's - well, god's gift, which he's not. I hated his Melchior in Spring Awakening, and he only added to the endless list of things that were punch able about Godspell.

No it wasn't. The casting is also not an example of something that damaged a show. The show would not have happened without her involvement, the show sold tickets.

Point taken, financially she helped the show. However artistically I feel she harmed it.

When I saw it, I felt she was a distraction and did a disservice (she was breaking the 4th wall and mugging for members of the audience in the front rows.) Of course it's Grease - not Shakespeare or Gershwin - but her terrible acting and voice coupled with her obvious flippancy (no doubt from the repetitivity of acting on Broadway)harmed the show. Even Rosie herself has stated that towards the end of her run she was merely clocking her time.
