A tiny bit more dialogue and I would have been completely satisfied, but it's still orgasmic as is. Carrie CDs are shipping!

Love the short clip of Marin Mazzie singing "Those Boys"

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Is it just me or did Carmen Cusack base her line readings on Julia Sugarbaker. The inflections are uncanny. It's kinda irritating actually. I kinda wish she skipped that accent.

Agreed Betty. I never got the point of Carmen's accent and hate it as well.

Also the recording sounds freaking fantastic. The orchestrations are wonderful and Marin sounds great. Definitely worth the wait.

First of all, thanks once again to Sh-K-Boom for not only recording all these shows but also releasing them on iTunes around the world. Long gone are the days of waiting for overpriced imports to arrive in the UK, as once again I'm able to buy day-and-date with the US. If they're reading this - THANKS!

As for Carrie itself... I know the Broadway soundboard but obviously have never seen the show so can't really comment on how the whole thing works on stage, but it doesn't come across as a very even show on the recording at all. Some of the songs are both lyrically and melodically fairly rubbish - the title song is just silly, for instance, and virtually all of Tommy's material is cringe-making, not to mention the bizarre 80s pop sound of Unsuspecting Hearts.

The re-orchestrations have helped some material - the school stuff, particularly In and Do Me A Favour, sounds marvellous - but unfortunately have damaged And Eve Was Weak, which was my favourite number before. Marin Mazzie's performance is great - and all her other numbers sound pretty fantastic - but without the strings and brass in particular Eve Was Weak just doesn't have the same impact.

Clearly Carrie would never be a great show, and it's also clear that the Carrie/Margaret material is far stronger than the school stuff. Hopefully, however, the new recording and the MCC production will "rehabilitate" the show a little from its mindboggling original conception.

Now that I'm actually listening to the whole CD for the second time, I'm struck by just how much it feels like Bat Boy's cast album, in style, sound, and emotional tone.

It's funny- Bat Boy HAD to be in part a reaction to the camp-horror-superdrama of Carrie's original staging, and now the new Carrie feels akin to Bat Boy instead of the opposite.

I would have gotten mine on Wednesday, but didn't bother to check the mail before I left for New York. So, I got it when I got home last night.

I really like it. I did like the show when I saw it, but there were a few details that weren't so great. Like I was not impressed with how Marin played Margaret. But, I love her on the recording. Glad I decided to get it and not wait.

Marin Mazzie is a force to be reckoned with! She's thrilling and marvelous on the recording, I can't get enough of her songs. It makes me wish they had re-released a NEXT TO NORMAL cast recording when she took over (not that she was better than Ripley but I'd have loved to have a recording of her singing the sh!t out of those songs).
Still not sure I can appreciate the songs sung by the high schoolers but Mazzie and Ranson, make the whole thing worth it.

I think the high school song 'IN' is one of the best songs in the show, I also really like Night We'll Never Forget. Songs like World According to Chris are a bit duff and they should go back to the original version of Do Me a Favour but I quite like a lot of the teen stuff

The organ (synthesizer) runs in counterpoint during "And Eve Was Weak" at first threw me (drawing much attention when I listen with earbuds, as opposed to speakers) as I didn't really hear them in the theater. But they're effective. The arrangements were necessarily scaled down, but in a way, it takes the bombast out of the material, and makes it of a piece. "Open Your Heart" is the best example, as the choral interludes (dating back to the original workshops by the way) allow the song to fit comfortably into the style of music that precedes it. In the B'way original, the segue from the high school voices to either Cook or Buckley was as jarring as it was (to some) thrilling.

Footage from the Barnes & Nobles signing

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
