Has anyone seen the new touring production of Spring Awakening? If so, how was it?

Im seeing it in January. Saw the first national tour and loved it. Can't wait to see it again.

HeyMrMusic, what instrument do you play? I'm a violinist (as well as a singer and pianist). I've done orchestra pits before, so I sort of have a soft spot for the under-appreciated musicians of Broadway shows/tours. I can't way to see this show at the Tennessee Theatre this spring!

I'm the violist. The show is traveling with the full band, which is awesome and pretty much essential for this show. It's unreal to have the opportunity to play this score. The orchestrations are so much fun. It'll be hard for me to sound unbiased, but I think this production is definitely worth seeing and/or revisiting.

I know someone who is in the show and she is having a blast doing the show. I have heard that the production is a great one so I am looking forward to seeing it at some point.

Thanks for all the comments and good for you HeyMrMusic. I will make a point to see!

I couldn't help but notice that it's playing for single night shows here in Florida (vs the 6 night for the first run) so I hope that isn't too grueling a schedule.

Well, it's non-Equity now.

Thanks, Steve! I'll try not to let the schedule get to me. :)

Non-Eq certainly does not mean lesser talent for this tour. Many were cast for the Broadway show, 1st tour, etc. from open calls. So it's pretty much the same talent pool and the same casting directors and the like. Just many one-nighters and smaller cities.

HeyMrMusic that is so cool! I remember when I saw the first tour how amazing and energetic the band was. I loved having the band onstage. This show has some incredible orchestrations and its so cool to be able to see the orchestra right in the middle of all the action.

I was at opening night of this tour last night. I haven't seen the show before so I don't have anything to compare it to. Even though it was their first night, it seemed to go off without a glitch as far as I could tell, anyway. They had some trouble with technical that delayed the start but it seemed to work once they got going (or, again, at least not noticeable to a newbie like me).

The sound, however, was horrible. It was almost impossible to make out what they were singing whenever the mics were used. One exception was the actress who played Ilse, whose performance in the second act ended up being the one I appreciated the most.

^ I'm sure the sound problems will get ironed out very quickly. That's pretty normal for an opening night of a tour.

I'm seeing this production on November 10th in Fort Worth, TX. Is there any word on the sound issues being ironed out? Also, do they frequently use the full set or is there the standard list of cut set pieces depending on how long the stop is?

i wonder what non-eq means?
Mrmusic, so you are saying that its the same talent on the non union tour as the Eq tour? i wonder why producers would even do an Eq tour then if the talent is the same. Why pay people more if they non-union performers are the same quality.

The Spring Awakening set is pretty minimalistic to begin with -- back wall, some lights, some chairs. The only change from Broadway and the Equity Tour is that there's no moving platform in the center, and the sides are just curtains.

Have they cut the on-stage seating?

^No, they still have that and still have some of the ensemble seated there in street clothes.

The platform doesn't rise? That's too bad. I always thought that was a very simple and very cool effect with the blue lights.

I saw the tour in Minneapolis on Saturday night. Overall I thought it was a pretty good show. (I had seen the first national when it came through Minneapolis last year or whenever.) I was pretty intensely disappointed by the Melchior. Didn't feel like he had much of a voice. Wendla had a lovely voice, but I became increasingly annoyed at her diction. Too much of a good thing! I missed the platform rising, and also the fog at the end. Still, a really good show. I don't think I would have guessed it was non-Eq if I hadn't known beforehand.

I saw the show last night in Fort Worth, TX. Overall it was a great show! The theatre seemed pretty near sold out which is surprising for this area. The only big difference I noticed set wise was the lack of the moving platform, which at times I did miss but overall was not really needed, and the steps that expanded over the orchestra pit from the equity tour. There were some sound issues, but it was mainly just the sound people trying to balance out everyone.

Cast wise, they were very energetic which was nice! None of them were really bad by any means, but a few of the boys could have announciated their lines a bit better. Its strange, when I saw the equity tour in Dallas, I thought the boys were far superior in their performance to the girls, but this time it was the other way around. Those girls were amazing vocally! The adults, particularly the adult female, played their parts very well. Not to mention the orchestra sound great too!

Well, there is my short review. :]
