"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
Stokes and LuPone in a new musical??? The rumor had been floating for months now, but it is really exciting to see it actually happening!
David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail
-Into the Fire
Scarlet Pimpernel
Based on the character breakdowns, it almost has to be:
Pepa- Sherie Rene Scott Ivan- Brian Stokes Mitchell Candela- d'Adre Aziza Paulina- Patti LuPone Lucia- Mary Beth Peil Marisa- Nikka Graff Lanzarone Taxi Driver- Danny Burstein
LuPone seems more ideally suited for Lucia, but that's the only character that could possibly be played by a woman of a certain age, which would mean it has to be Peil.
The only principal role that seems to have been left out of that announcement is Carlos, the son of Ivan and Lucia.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

But isn't Lucia the mentally insane ex wife? I can't imagine that's anyone but Patti.
Yessssss! The attitude in that theatre is going to blow the roof off every night. I hate to sound like a busybody but I cannot wait to hear the backstage gossip. Patti and Sheri are either going to be best friends or kill each other and you know the drama will be intense!
Yes, ljay, but like I said, that's the only role that could even remotely be cast with someone Mary Beth Peil's age. There is no one else she could play.
Patti (to a lesser degree) also fits Paulina, who is described as "a smart lawyer, a 1987 feminist, and a bitch - although we must also believe she can be swept off her feet. Attractive underneath her business suit and stern demeanor. Ambitious, funny, on par with Pepa. It's a surprise that she ends up with Ivan."
That's the only other older role, so I imagine that's how it's been cast.

I think LuPone must be playing Lucia....Either they have reconceived the role of Paulina for an older actress or Mary Beth Piel is doing some role original to the musical...
