The Band's Visit has Best Musical and Best Score pretty much on lock (and rightfully so, IMO).

Mean Girls, I think, is the only other contender that might grab Best Book from TBV if they've tightened things up between D.C. and opening.

I guess only two nominees will be allowed in musical revival just like in 2011 with HTSIBWRTrying e Anything Goes.

Frozen and Mean Girls will get in, will Summer be a hit? Maybe can grab the fourth slot.
"

Not the same. Those were the only two revivals that year. We have three this year.

Given the buzz around Alex Newell's performance (and deservedly so) odds that he has good chance a winning a tony?

add me to the
bands visit-best musical
katrina lenk-best actress

bands visit is a bit low key and subtle yet id be stunned if tony voters get behind mean girls of frozen
for best musical based on out of town reviews and tony voters recent history of voting innovative and often less flashy shows like once gentlemens guide and fun home

katrinas performance is so standout im going to c her again. based on other lead actress contenders the only real competition imo will be frozens lead caissie levy who is a really great actress with a big voice in a big role with big songs. i see her in may and will have the head comparison that week along with the lead in
mean girls who i dont know.

tony shaloub was very understated in his role and only sang one song. he may get the nod-ive heard like others how strong the lead is in spongebob
i cant bring myself to see spongebob so cant speculate

bands visit will also have a good chance for best music book and direction

I know many people aren’t very fond of the spongebob musical but i have to say, after seeing it with a low expectation Ethan Slater was amazing and i would not be surprised if he was nominated for best leading actor in a musical

Unless I'm missing something, there are only 6 eligible Best Musicals (Band's Visit, Mean Girls, Frozen, SpongeBob, Margaritaville, Summer). Unless Summer surprises, it seems likely that SpongeBob gets the 4th Best Musical slot.

And I think two categories are pre-determined: Best Score (4 eligible -- Band/Mean/Frozen/Sponge, unless Imogen Heap's music is great in Harry Potter) and Best Revival (3 eligible -- Fair Lady/Carousel/Island).

After revisiting The Band's Visit I have to say that John Cariani should be the supporting actor nominated from that show. He's funny, but also heartbreaking.

I hope he and Ari'el Stachel both get nominations (and the chances are there, since the category isn't too dense this year). Haled is such a critical character in the show; he's really the only person in the show able to recognize the possibility of budding relationships. And Stachel's performance is so gorgeously sleek and cool.

Do you think any of the gods from OOTI will get a nom? Sorry for going off topic.

We really enjoyed Merle Dandridge and Alex Newell, but I'd not be surprised if Lea Salonga was nominated purely on rep alone.

I hope and think at least one OOTI gods will get a nomination.

Featured actress doesn't seem too crowded. I'd save slots for Lindsey Mendez and Renee Fleming, one of the mean girls girls, or one of the frozen leading ladies depending how they are billed.

That leaves one of two open spots that I believe would first go to one of the gods over Lili Cooper in Spongebob (Who I thought was fantastic and would also love to see her squeeze in).

Hopefully that go with Merle Dandridge, but I have a gut feeling they would go with Salonga given the name recognition, and Dandridge having taken this long leave from the show.

Having not seen Alexanger Gemignani and Norbert Leo Butz yet, Alex Newell is probably the soft frontrunner for supporting actor at this point for ooti. He frequently recieves standing O's and is hilarious and warm.

I also think Merle has a shot at a nom as does Phillip Boykin and maybe even Kenita Miller.

IF Darrington or Dandridge get nominated, a lot of Tony voters would probably have to see OOTI a 2nd time, which could help the show.

Of anybody in OOTI getting a Featured nomination, I really, really hope it'd be Kenita Miller.

I agree that Salonga is the featured actress from OOTI who will get a nom. Her name, mostly, but also there was such a silence that fell over that room when she began singing "The Human Heart." I know it's partially because everyone is fangirling, but she truly commands the space. I think she'll make it in before Miller or Dandridge.

I agree, but judging by the iconic nature of Mr. Doolittle, Butz is certainly not one to count out. Obviously, we have no idea if he's any good, but you'd have to really mess up that role to not just about steal the show from Eliza and Higgins, IMO.

I'm hoping the acting noms for OOTI are Phillip Boykin, Kenita Miller, and Merle Dandrige. (And Hailey Kilgore.) Lea Salonga was excellent, and I'll listen to that recording of The Human Heart all day long, but I just don't think her performance went as far as the other two supporting ladies, IMHO. It's the roles, not her.

I also wouldn't argue with Isaac Powell sneaking in, because I think he really nails a totally thankless role, but it's a crowded Featured Actor season, so it's pretty unlikely.

For predictions' sake I'll say that Alex Newell will probably get the nom, but he would not be my choice out of this multi-talented cast.

Without having heard a few of the other shows, I really am also rooting for OOTI in Orchestrations. Is this the first time that a vocal arranger has been nominated alongside the orchestrator? To that I say ... IT'S ABOUT TIME... and AnnMarie Milazzo's vocal arrangements add so much color to this production, I'd love to see them rewarded.

Yes, this is the first time a vocal arranger would be nominated if Once On This Island is nominated for Orchestrations (that is to say unless the traditional orchestrator also did the vocal arrangements, like Stephen Oremus and others). AnnMarie Milazzo would be the third female nominee ever in this category.

Im torn between Spongebob and OOTI for best set, I am leaning towards OOTI  but Sponge is supposed to be great as well. I doubt any of the other nominees will be close to these.

For some reason, I had it in my head that Greg Hildreth’s Olaf was going to be the “Genie” of this season (aka, a strong Featured Actor contender). Though maybe he still could be, there are still 3 more weeks of previews.

Kenita Miller!

I think ONCE ON THIS ISLAND will possibly rack up the most TONY nominations this season.

And considering that THE BAND'S VISIT was off-Broadway last year. ISLAND will be taking home a slew of the other New York Awards.

Well, maybe. Once on this Island isn’t eligble for as many things as Band’s Visit would be, so it doesn’t really matter.

I would assume direction would come down to Arden and Cromer. Very different work but wonderful execution.

Island could easily rack up at least ten nominations, even more if multiple featured performers are recognized. Band’s Visit might just edge it out because of its eligibility in Book and Score.

Sooo...is Rocktopia trying to get a Best Musical nomination? I think we all assumed it would go the way of most concerts, but I just noticed the Tony Awards website lists it as an eligible under Best Musical. Since it hasn't started yet, that could be changed by the committee...but I guess they've maybe submitted for consideration? I don't see Tony nominators getting behind a concert even if it is eligible, but whatevs.

Also curious: did anyone see Summer out of town? And if so do we think LaChanze/de Bose (whichever is the actual lead) could bump someone from Best Actress?
