They should just wait 10 years and let fully bearded Gyllenhaal do it.

The archival shoots housed at Lincoln Center do not come close to comparing to a pro-shoot meant for professional release.

Gyllenhaal actually isn't that far off from age-appropriate for Tevye even now.  Tzeitel is supposed to be anywhere from 18-20 and Sholem Aleichem (the basis of Tevye) was 24 when he had his oldest daughter.  So that would actually put Tevye as about 42-44.

He just reads a lot younger but I don’t care. He’s also Jewish so people wouldn’t freak out if he was cast.

That wasn't just the actors though, there wasn't a single Jewish person involved in the entire production and it showed. It was dreadful!

Did it? I saw that “Falsettos” at the Other Palace 3x and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ummm Mandy Patinkin would be perfect for Tevye.

My issue is not the preference but the dire outrage. Kail has earned the right to do this, just as Spielberg had/has with WSS, etc etc (and Ivo has too etc etc Thomas Kail, For Some Reason, Is Remaking FIDDLER ON THE ROOF"

I'm not sure how he has "earned the right,"  but I agree in that I, too, don't see why there's any outrage. Let's face it,  there's no demand for this, so if he can get someone to pay for it,  have at it. Actually, there was no demand for a remake of West Side Story either; it only exists because Spielberg wanted to do it. His name is all that was needed.  If it doesn't sell,  then Kail will need some heavyweight actors to get this made.

I absolutely hated it. But that was more the show itself than the production. I actually think it topped Cats as my most hated night at the theatre ever. I enjoyed the kids performance and the wife was ok but that was it. I have never seen a show before where I loathed every single character in it.

The highlight for my friend and I (who also hated it with a passion) was the woman in the front row who was sat reading a book the entire first Act and then in Act 2 she fell asleep with her arms and head on the stage LOLOL

I don't know why this remake doesn't bother me. I guess the likelihood of it surpassing the original is just so small. It's like someone trying to remake Cabaret. Like, okay, knock yourself out.

It's like the recent remake of Annie. Does anyone remember Brief Encounter with Sophia Loren and Richard Burton? Granted, that was a TV film, but still. There's a huge pile of forgotten remakes.

I doubt they'd do it, but WeeThomas2 makes an interesting point about performing it in Yiddish like the recent revival.

I cannot watch My Fair Lady or West Side Story for more than a few minutes because of the dubbing.

Lin Manuel Miranda is playing Tevye.

I joke... and yet...

Kail has been thinking about this for awhile. His strong vision is apparent at what, in retrospect, is clearly not a "wedding" but a backer's audition. He might even make a decent Motel (2:18)

I do think we can rule out Lin as Tevye, Luis however (3:09)...

Screw it, let's get Adam Sandler as Tevye and Daniel Radcliffe as Motel

Based on the quarantine home videos that he posts of himself and his Golde eating matzah, he's basically already prepping for the role.

I sincerely hope that this is not a modern or multicultural version of the story. The story is about one group of people, and the plot is universal enough that all can relate to it no matter their background. And it shouldn't be modern, Yes, there's still prejudice, but again, this is something we can connect on our own. It doesn't need to be spelled out for us. I'm cautiously optimistic about the future of this.
"

Film has to be more realistic than stage productions. That is why, in the final analysis, Babs never made Gypsy and Glenn is never going to make Sunset. IMO Patinkin is 2 decades too old for the role; I will be shocked if he is chosen, despite being incredibly talented. Also, I think he is already committed to the revival of The Great Comet that is planned for 2022.
"

There’s going to be a revival ofGreat Cometwith Mandy Patinkin in 2022? What'd I miss? Or is this just a crazy rumor?
"

I guess my rare jokes are still subtle. Why would they revive The Great Comet any time soon? It has been a financial failure 3 separate times. (This is about reality, not quality). In stating that he is much too old for the role, I wanted to make it a moot point by saying 'and he's not available any way'.
"

Yes, it was just subtle enough to throw me off, even though I know the whole Patinkin/Great Comet history very well and basically had no reason at all to believe any sort of "revival" - even a concert - would actually occur. So shame on me.

The funny thing is, a few days later, Dave Malloy announced a "West Coast Premiere" of Great Comet next spring - in theory - by a small Berkeley theater company where he got his start.

As for Fiddler, I don't know if he has the voice or presence for it - having not seen him in anything on stage - but Gyllenhaal makes more sense to me. He's still a movie star, and is closer to the right age.
