The characters were "very very dated"?  It takes place in 1776 -- what exactly were you expecting??

Shakespeare, Chekhov, Moliere, etc must REALLY send you over the edge!  LOL

To my knowledge this is indeed all female. I know a current Hello, Dolly star went in for John Adams but sadly didn’t book it.

The Equity audition call for 1776, which occurred on May 31, 2019, requested "People of all racial and gender identities."

It was the direction, imo. The characters don't actually sound boring on stage. I do think it's a great show, but the movie didn't translate well for me. I feel the same way about watching Shakespeare on screen - it doesn't completely work. His stories and characters are too theatrical (as intended).

Huh? Of course, Shakespeare's stories and characters are theatrical; there was no other medium when he wrote them.  What Shakespeare films have you seen?  Some of then work as films and others do not.

I have yet to see a single advertisement of the musical that states it will be an all female cast. If Ms.Paulis is indeed doing this and changing the expected show that much, don't you think they should be telling the audience what they are buying tickets to?

They are buying tickets to 1776. Did WSS advertise the lack of the ballet or I Feel Pretty? Or the last reviaval ADVERTISE now with more spanish?

Advertisements are to sell tickets.

And I haven't seen ANY ads.

Curious how this will effect the tour and then the Broadway run. I guess it will premiere officially at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA?

The press release says it will play at next year's season - and, tbh, I can't imagine Paulus premiering it anywhere BUT the ART.   I'll let you know about timing when they contact me.

Sigh, my son and I were just talking about how long to hold out hope for this coming to fruition, maybe an hour before the announcement.  Just adding it to our list of why 2020 sucks.  (But we both have our health!)

I really hope it doesn't come to that, as that would effect the whole pre-Broadway tour, but that's probably likely.

I have been hearing it will skip the ART premiere entirely. They already have contractual obligations with venues.

I was told today that the Philadelphia engagement (scheduled for December 2020) is proceeding as planned and will not be affected by this cancellation.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Carolee? That's a shame.  Her Adams was great in the all female concert of this a while back.  Surprised that we still haven't heard of ANY casting for this.

I just checked, and while the Los Angeles Music Center has canceled most of its season and postponed one other show, they are indeed selling tickets for 1776. The run is scheduled to begin 21 July at the Ahmanson.
