I also think Patti is probably the best choice to bring this role to the stage and I'm sure they would age up Miranda's daughters.  Patti could also read younger.  Powerful and successful women in New York tend to have their children later in life.  Patti is a wonderful actress and while Meryl's icy subtle performance is perfect for screen, it probably wouldn't read onstage.  Patti would be brilliant.

Christine Baranski would be amazing! Though she does look a lot like Anna Wintour... maybe too close for producers' comfort?

I think they should cast an unknown for Andie, while Emily could be someone we already know.

I agree with those who have suggested that Miranda should be a non Singing role. She’d be much more powerful and intimidating if she simply had strong book scenes and presence without breaking into song. For example: The biggest problem (IMHO) with LaChiusa’s BERNARDA ALBA is giving the titular character songs. The songs he wrote for the Matriarch let us in to her psyche and allow us to empathize with the character when we shouldn’t. She would have been much more terrifying if she didn’t have her songs. Save for maybe the finale... that’s a chilling and terrifying ending to BA.... I digress.



In my fantasy casting— Miranda would be a non singing role; with Cate Blanchett as Miranda.

A lot of these women are too old. Miranda isn’t 70. I think giving her some singing is still necessary. She’s the most interesting character in the film. I think having her not sing would make her too dull. 

I could see Vanessa Williams in the role (she’s already played it essentially in Ugly Betty).

You could easily write around this.  Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they completely change it from the Harry Potter book since we haven't had a new Harry Potter book in like a decade.  I feel like it's easy to write it so she could be older.

I feel like Laura Benanti could be a good Miranda. She has a sort of quiet snark and she exudes a strong alpha woman presence. She has also admitted to always reading much older than she actually is. I feel like with some rewites she could be a good Miranda.

It does NO good to "dreamcast" Miranda without knowing the vocal range that it's being written for. Elton could be writing it for a soprano. He could be writing it for a Broadway belter. It could need more of a rock voice, or a jazz voice, or maybe it's a "Rex Harrison-type" role. Same goes for Andie and all the other roles. Such intense speculation usually leads to disappointment.

I am sure we will find out more as they start doing workshops and further development on the piece.

This feels like Helen St. Clair (before Bullets came to Bway) all over again.

So? It's just a reading. A full production could be a year+ away, and maybe none of these actors will continue on with the show (or maybe all of them will, time will tell). Mario Cantone also did the readings of Mrs. Doubtfire.

I think the best part of this casting is Helena York as Emily...that is f*cking INSPIRED. She will kill that role if she continues.

Krystina is extremely talented, and thrilled for her. Wish they'd go for someone a bit more off the beaten path, but her voice is stunning. Emily is good as Miranda is good, but I can't imagine they're not trying to get a big name for the future.

No matter what though...Shaina Taub. Damn. So proud of her.
