"It's been heading in that direction for a while now. When I joined this site 10+ years ago, there used to be wide-ranging discussions about theater history, experimental theater, Off and Off-Off Broadway, regional theater, opera, etc. Nowadays it's basically just musicals, Broadway, and "does X sign autographs after matinees?""

Sad, but true. But you could say something similar about the country as a whole, I suppose. Sentiment and buzzwords have replaced thought and discourse.

The Michael Friedman thread is another indicator - one of the best theatre songwriters of our day dies, and only a handful of people reply, and most of them only cite his one Broadway show.

Respectfully, newintown, I don't think the Michael Friedman thread is necessarily a good indicator of what you're saying (although I mostly agree with the overall point).

I can only speak for myself, who posted on it and did reference Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. But it's not for lack of wanting to know Friedman's other work. I'll be the first to admit that I am only in my 20s and still have much to learn. But that's why I'm a member of these forums.

Your comment is dumb. Still, no need to delete it. Because it's only your opinion.

My opinion is that free speech is important, and that deleting random opinions of others that don't necessarily match yours (what is happening here on the forum and what this discussion is about) is alarming.

But considering the fact that you like to delete and erase everything in your way that does not match your way of thinking, you have probably blocked me so you won't read this anyway.

It's not about free speech, Dave. It's about being respectful - not politically correct which is where you're seemingly taking this - to people, who like Alan pointed out are REAL human beings. We have the power of anonymity here (most of us do anyway, including you). Anonymity shouldn't give you endless tools to be a tool.

All human beings turn into old hags, if they are lucky enough to have the privilege. Don't be so touchy. And nobody called her anything like that in the first place. The only word used was "aging".

Everyone is offended by something. You can't just direct other people to conform to what you are so sensitive about. Should I want to erase the moderator's message now because his action is rude and offensive to me? No, I can tell him I think it's unreasonable and now we have a nice discussion. That's what the board is about.

So Kristin Chenoweth's thread that's about possible roles gets deleted, but Cynthia Erivo's twitter thread only gets locked, but it's still visible?!

Oh, many messages in that one were removed very selectively too. Especially the ones where I pointed out that I was disappointed that Cynthia did not think in "human" but "race". So basically, my messages were deleted for saying "we are still dealing with people here".

Oh my, the double agenda of the moderators.

I was wondering why Dave28282 was talking about Kristin Chenoweth so much, but now that i see he has turned it into a discussion of race, as per usual, it all makes sense...

I'm answering LxGstv's question. I will never be the one bringing it up. I am the one who always asks what it has to do with it. If you have read any of my posts you would know that.

So, I guess it's easier to just not gossip.

...unless, of course, it's something BWW can scoop up as "Rialto Chatter."

We all knew it was going to come back to that Cynthia Erivo thread sooner or later.

Well, technically I brought it up... I didn't see the Chenoweth thread, but I doubt it was worse than the Erivo thread, after all, the Erivo thread was made specifically to talk about her twitter habits... not potential roles...

I think it should have been handled this way...

The moderator should have left the thread up but made a comment on it. Something like: "Dear all, please remember to be respectful when referring to performers. They are real people and not just someone playing a part in a specific age bracket. We will monitor this thread to make sure the comments are respectful, but if they cross the line of common decency we will indeed shut the thread down. Thanks for your understanding."

It is unsettling to read negative/derogatory comments about a performer, but it's also unsettling to have threads removed with no warning or explanation (an explanation was provided only when a member questioned it).  The answer is to use reason and logic in these matters.

I was actually gaining respect for you over the last few weeks because of your messages about the unreasonable race focus at times. We agree on many levels.

But this remark makes me question that respect again.

Not saying it should have or shouldn't have been deleted (because part of me doesn't really care all that much in this particular instance), but as I recall a poster (not entirely sure but I believe it might have been the original poster) on that thread referred to KC as now being "a scary 48."

Calling anyone "a scary 48" is simply a rotten, ageist thing to do.
That comment, if I recall it correctly, was offensive - revoltingly so.
Not to mention that there is certainly nothing remotely "scary" about Chenoweth's appearance (quite the contrary) or anything remotely remarkable about her age (which is not to imply that the comment would be more acceptable if said about anyone at any age).

Discussions about potential roles turn into a non human focused tragedy with Cynthia too, don't worry.

Those are separate arguments. You can absolutely have a conversation about theater history, experimental theater, Off and Off-Off Broadway, regional theater, opera, etc without "gushing" or exclusively keeping it to positive comments. In fact, it's probably easier to have less emotional discussions when actually talking about something of substance. I happen to see more musicals than plays and I find the rush, stage door, etc. threads to occasionally be a helpful resource. But I'm here if anyone wants to chat opera or off-Broadway. Once in a while I start a thread when I'm enthusiastic about a show no one's talking about. I just don't want to be one of those people who starts a thread just to post his review of a show or link to her blog.

That's nice. Can we now please stop calling eachother a color twice in every line?

As humans we agreed. I fully support your last 20 posts of the last few weeks here. I share your opinion, is what I was saying.

Honey, stop talking about race.  Period.  It's just not your place to discuss it.  You shouldn't have to look past my skin to see me as human.  I am what I am.  My race is a physical characteristic of who I am.  Your white privilege is that you can basically ignore race because racism doesn't effect you.  You don't get called racial slurs on the subway.  You don't have to live in fear of that.  You have the luxury of being blind to race.  I cannot be.  I don't believe that you live in America which would explain why there is a cultural divide.  Here we try to face a problem head on and try to fix it.  The race problem in America is insane and so we need to talk about it.  I'm just not sure that you understand how racist and tone deaf your remarks are coming off after some recent events in America.  Black people are human.  White people are human.  Asian people are human.  We're all human.  We don't have to be or think any less "black" to be "human."  That being said, Cynthia Erivo is ridiculous on twitter and I agree that she needs to grow the f up.  Also, yeah the Chenoweth thread was pretty mean spirited in the way that it was worded.  Someone should start up a "Dreamcast Chenoweth" thread that doesn't describe her as "aging," "ancient," and an "old hag."  I think that would probably be more constructive.

Every single time I see someone who didn't grow up in the States (and therefore doesn't have the kind of experience of what it is to deal with race in this particular country) try to say something insightful about race relations in America, I was to throw an egg at a toddler.  I'm looking at you, Andrew Sullivan, and your bulllsh*t about the f*cking Bell Curve.

Totally agree.

It's just that "fixing it" lies not necessarily on emphasizing the separation in all situations that have nothing to do with it, calling out the differences between black and white all day long in every far-fetched situation.

Honestly, does BWW not ban or warn people? I cannot imagine that Dave28282's continuous comments about race are the kind of community they want to cultivate. There is a line, there is good taste, and both have been tossed out the window
