There was a lot of Karen, but it looks like they finally gave her a backbone.

iluvtheatertrash- You haven't lost it. Hudson was singing "I Got Love" during her introduction in the trailer. Complete with Melba Moore riffs.

I'm sick of the "Karen vs. Ivy" thing. Can't they both be on this show without it always having to be a rivalry?

I loved the first season, but have been skeptical about all the changes announced along the way. Now, after seeing that video, I'm super excited for the 2nd season!

I remember reading a while back that this season in addition to Marc and Scott they were hiring new composers to write the songs that Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus' characters compose.

Is Drew Gasparini one of the composers?

I hope they move it from a ivy vs Karen and turn it more into a whole "look at Broadway" style show. You could really do so much with that.

Hm, I was actually slightly underwhelmed by that, but I'm not jumping to any opinions.

I wouldn't think too much into the "spoiler" picture; Ivy always has those "fantasy" dream sequences.

"I'm sick of the "Karen vs. Ivy" thing. Can't they both be on this show without it always having to be a rivalry?"

Well, Ivy did screw Karen's fiance out of spite and then tried to mind-f**k her by telling her about it like she was doing her a favor, so I hardly think they're going to be friends. There will always be tension between the characters unless they figure out some way to put it behind them.

I don't mind tension. And even a rivalry over other things would even be better. But still a rivalry over Marilyn? That's tiring.

And the idea that they're still pushing the idea that some soulless American Idol waif might be a better stage talent than Megan Hilty is STILL patently absurd.

What is absurd is the fact that people still think this is about Megan Hilty and Kathrine McPhee. This is about 2 fictional characters named Ivy and Karen. Ivy is a terrible person. The only reason someone roots for her is that they are a Megan Hilty fan who can't seem to separate the difference between an actor and a role they play.

Or maybe it's just that the character Ivy sings and acts circles around Karen in the role of Marylin. I'm not going to root for the "good girl" Karen to get the part if I find her bland in the role.

Just because Ivy is a bitch, doesn't mean she isn't talented. There are plenty of actors whose work I enjoy, even if the actor her or his self seems to be a jerk.

Finally Derek himself is also a jerk, but plenty of people don't seem to have an issue with him being the director. (I don't either.)

And when did you see Karen in the role of Marilyn to determine whether or not she's suitable? In the world of the tv show evidently the director thinks she is better and the audience approved. This is the story the writers are telling. If you don't like it then say so by changing the channel.

The truth of the matter is that if the character of Ivy was played by some unknown person and not a beloved Broadway semi-star then no one would be pulling for her to come out on top.

This argument is absurd.

From the trailer it seemed like Ivy got fired on the basis of both her overdose, that might have stole thunder from the production in the Boston try-outs, and Karen went public to the creative team about why she and Dev broke up. At least it appears there are consequences for what Ivy is doing and that in itself may have blackballed her out of other roles. I think Ivy's having her humble pie but obviously misses the people she worked with. She's not really fighting for the role anymore, from the trailer. She looks like damaged goods trying to rehabilitate her image.

There were plenty of reviewers who rooted for Ivy based on a talent level although everybody agreed she was one of many characters who got assassinated by the writing during season 1.

We saw Karen sing several Marylin numbers throughout the season, especially in the finale. Also it's absurd to think I have to agree that Karen is better because the director on the show tells me to. Tom1071, what I got from your initial argument is that we shouldn't root for Ivy because she's a terrible person. My answer to you is why not? We like who we like. It's not real life. I find Ivy a far more interesting character than Karen. I watch SMASH to be entertained, not to root for the "good guys". Ivy does a much better job of entertaining me than Karen, both as Ivy and when Ivy plays Marylin.

And in regards to your edit. I would be wiling to root for Karen if McPhee could sell me on her character. I think McPhee is talented, but not as a Broadway entertainer. It's simple as that.

In the show's world, Karen has some magical star quality that makes her oh so special and wonderful onstage. In my world, where I'm actually watching Smash, I noticed no such thing, let alone enough of it to overcome Karen's deficit of talent in comparison to Ivy.

Maybe I'd have been more invested in the nice girl if she had any characterization beyond "vaguely judgy of other women being sluts" and if her actress had anything resembling charisma.

But that's all besides the point! The important bit is - what makes good television? And for me, that stupid rivalry is way, way, beyond its sell-by date. If you want to be srs bsnss evening soap, you can't spice the rivalry up by making it campy and outrageous, so just...leave it. It's boring, and the added dimension of a sexual rivalry over Derek, that towering misogynist prick, only makes it skeevy and sexist on top of that. Focus on stories that are actually interesting instead of laboring under the delusion that anyone's going to give a crap about Karen vs. Ivy when the show spent the entire first season taking sides in the most idiotic manner possible.

Anyway. It still looks like Smash wants to be grown-up Glee, rather than what I wish it would go for, which is more like the West Wing of musical theater - soapy, yeah, but focused more on stories about a group of professionals getting things done in a collaborative work environment.

Ivy is a pro, but she is also volatile, erratic, amoral and unbalanced. She's brilliant when she's on, but in just twelve episodes, we've seen her "off" just as much.

I don't buy it for second.

I stand by my argument that the only reason some people here would want the character of Ivy to come out on top is because she is played by Megan Hilty. I think Megan Hilty is an incredible talent...but I think that Ivy Lynn got just what she deserved. Updated On: 11/20/12 at 08:19 PM

Megan Hilty is amazing she is a talent that can really light it up...I really like her...but IVY IS A BITCH and deserved everything that she got...I have no idea why you cant seperate this ...The Karen character is a good person who deserves this ..come on seperate Megan from Ivy...I think she does...

I cannot root for a character that I find boring, even if that character was wronged by someone else. Surely you've watched some show/movie or read some book where you didn't care for the designated good guy. They should either have gone with someone like Laura Osnes for Karen or directed Megan Hilty to suck.

I still think because Katherine was on American Idol and didnt pay her Bway dues true broadway people seem to have a problem with her-she plays the part as it is written and she can sing-her character is supposed kind of bland I think...when she is Marilyn she comes to life I believe

massofmen - IMO "Glee" lost it's way after the first season and never recovered. The writers and producres forgot what made it a hit and started all these "artist" of the week" episodes. They also made the character of "Sue" really lame and incredibly over the top. Finally, SMASH has much more musical theater talented performers/actors than "Glee".

Perhaps Dev does see something "special" in Karen, but if it's not evident to the rest of that fictional world or especially the viewing public, that bending of reality and logic works against the series. Hilty simply comes across as a more talented, more realistic Broadway performer, whatever her character's nasty moves. Just being nicer than your rival doesn't mean one is entitled to the plum role.

Anyway, that's so last season. I, too, hope the focus shifts to other, more interesting aspects of the long road to mounting a Broadway musical.
