I saw this in Chicago by the way and it was wonderful... most of the comments above are valid, sure, but I didn't care because Renee Fleming's voice turns this already amazing score into something almost sinful to listen to. It's like eating a Devil's food cheesecake from Junior's. You know it shouldn't be happening but Gosh Darn it you are going to indulge as long as it's in front of you.

I have to admit that this soundstome like the stupidest idea ever for a musical, which leads me to conclude that it is either going to be incredibly bad or incredibly brilliant. I am hoping for brilliant, as I like all three leads (I saw Carmen Cusack a decade or so ago in a

They've done Porgy and Weil's Mahagony, but both have always been called "operas" by their creators from the beginning, although both works have been performed outside of opera houses."
Very true... but that could end up being their downfall. Broadway musicals have always really just been a new form of opera. Opera is musical the
I would love to see it come to the Met. The combo of a beloved Broadway musical and Renee Fleming could really sell out the met on a limited schedule and be a triumph for the composer, and musical theatre crossover in general.
I would have loved to see the Shuberts build a hotel... with several theatres underneath.
I think there is a need for a Broadway Blackbox. Something similar to what Steppenwolf Theatre Company has... where the entire audience can be manipulated into any form of seating... so long as there are always 500 seats.

Yes... in general... but even the tourists are getting tired of them.
If you google Spencer Henderson the picture of Liza with a Z comes up so I believe he is one of the two men. He died in 1993 at the age of 44 from complications from AIDS. He was in the Broadway cast of Promises Promises, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Zorba and danced on many television shows. He choreographed as well, most notably for the film Steel Magnolias (my fave of all time).
A google search of Jimmy (James) Roddy also brings up the same picture... further searches
I came here from the other message board to see what y'all were saying about this, but it doesn't look like there's much chatter here. Apparently the Local 802 president, Adam Krauthamer, has cited an old rule which bars orchestrators from playing in the pits of shows they have orchestrated and so Charlie Rosen was fired just hours before the first preview of Be More Chill.Â
"No Orchestrator of a given production may serve as Orchestra
He DEFINITELY doesn't forget her - he has PTSD induced nightmares about Kim that haunt him every night. In fact it could be argued that the entirety of MISS SAIGON is one of Chris's Vietnam PTSD nightmares (this is how I would frame the movie)
Though, to your point it always seems like such a weird choice for Ellen to sing "You've been with me two years and not shared things you've done." Again, a perfectly normal lyric however unnecessary. It could
I attended the reading and it was really wonderful... though... that doesn't always transfer to the stage. So much can change when it's up on it's feet and no one is reading stage directions. We shall see but I am very hopeful - the cast is terrific for sure!
My money would be on Downstate.... though plays out of NYC are rarely awarded, this is a play by an author who already has a pulitzer at a theatre that already has a few pulitzers - in Chicago no less, New Yorker's weekend getaway spot. This is at least on their radar.
My other two bets for the "nominee" slots would be SLAVE PLAY by Jeremy Harris and USUAL GIRLS by Ming Peiffer.
It's definitely between Slave Play and Downstate...

Is Light in the Piazza problematic? Nov 30

The Light in the Piazza is a tragedy. It’s not a happy ending. It’s very sad knowing that this whole thing will fall apart soon. A similar ending happens in “the graduate.” It is supposed to be upsetting for the audience. That is why it is scored with sad music.
Clueless is my favorite movie of all time and I would HATE to miss this musical, but I am out of town on business for the complete run of the show. :O Should I make a pricey quick one night trip to NYC to see this???? I came here trying to see if it would transfer or get extended but it looks like that's a no go.
What do you guys think? Should I come back for one night to see the show? I need to decide ASAP.
The Scottsboro Boys? Nov 18

It had a terrible marketing campaign that didn’t even put Kander & Ebb above the title. They didn’t do enough publicity and they had a smear campaign against them for all the wrong reasons... this needs a revival with a big star and a flashy staging!
I think the thing missing from the original was flashiness. It needed more razzle dazzle. The material is so dark that it needs some over the top ridiculousness.
