^ I would LOVE to see that. It would be a nice fit. I wonder how the transfer will work for the design of the show if it transfers since it won't be outdoors anymore. They would always build the set out into the audience a little bit.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
My dream would be an all Sondheim/Sondheim related schedule. A major revival each year, PASSION, possibly and several lesser titles, DO I HEAR A WALTZ, SATURDAY NIGHT, and experimental productions; EVENING PRIMROSE. The all male FORUM, and perhaps International transfers, a Japanese SWEENEY? And a home for Steve to work and rework New Titles. A Dream. A night of Sondheim's favorite songs. A Revival of MARRY ME A LITTLE.
The past decade or so has brought revivals of West Side Story, Gypsy (twice), Anyone Can Whistle at Encores, Company, Follies at Encores and Broadway (twice), A Little Night Music, The Frogs, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd (with rumors of the London production on the way), Merrily at Encores, Sunday in the Park, Into the Woods (with some expecting a transfer of this summer's Central Park production), Assassins, Passion Off-Broadway at CSC this fall, plus revues like Putting it Together and Sondheim on Sondheim and countless 80th birthday celebrations, plus the NY premieres of Saturday NIght and Road Show. I guess we are due for Forum since it was last revived in 1996. I love his work and all, but New York stages have really turned into "Stephen Sondheim, This Is Your Life".
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
Smaxie-What you're saying is true for people who may have seen the original productions. However, for those of us who haven't been able to and have a strong appreciation for Sondheim, these revivals are really our window into his work.
let's see here...on the one hand GHOST/SPYDERMAN et al...on the other hand ANYTHING BY SONDHEIM?...guess where i am landing on this one...ANYTHING SONDHEIM wants to give us is PERFECT by me...
ONCE UPON will play a Nederlander house unless plans have changed very recently. (And Nederlander is producing it.)
INTO THE WOODS would be silly to play the Sondheim if the St. James is an option. Symbolism be damned, they can earn a lot more in 8 weeks at the St. J than at the Sondheim.
I wish the Roundabout would move 1776 to the Sondheim instead of the Airlines. The Airlines is not a great house for a musical.
Regardless, there are plenty of shows waiting to come in. No doubt a new tenant will be playing before year's end or sooner.
