'So You Think Can Dance' does not start again until the summer, but some changes have already been announced for the next season. Nigel Lythgoe has announced that the next season will not feature result shows,
"Fox have [sic] cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of ‘SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of May … Don’t worry ‘SYTYCD’ fans. I’m thrilled we have a new [season]. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”
This makes me very happy. Shows that run more than once a week suck. Plus, the results shows are nothing but recaps and fillers. Put it on the producers to figure out how to make it work once a week.
Thank god! I hope other shows follow suit. I dont need special guests and 40 thousand commercial breaks. Just feature the dancers.

Yay! If all the other shows do this- maybe there will be more room for- dare I say it- scripted, well-written television shows? I totally agree that the results shows are way too long and meaningless!
Very happy to hear this. The only down side is that this show did actually feature some wonderful dance acts that would normally never receive such national attention. But the rest was all annoying filler.

^ I agree that these shows often have pretty good performances. Not only the dance shows, but the singing ones too. However, it really is much too expensive to produce an hour or more show when the only relevant part lasts a few seconds.
This is so SMART. Kudos to FOX for initiating this.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

This is smart. One thing I liked about the now canceled Canadian version (besides the fact that the judges didn't take over the show with their shtick even if we had to put up with an obnoxious host) was the results shows were only 30 minutes. They still felt padded but with a group dance, a brief recap and then the elimintations it wasn't as bad as the AWFUL US ones always were which as others said here are impossible to sit through live).
As Matt said every so often they would have an interesting dance act perform, along with the requisite pop star, etc, but the past few seasons I foudn them often less and less interesting.
I don't see them cutting the DWTS or Idol result shows though, they still usually ank int he top 5 shows of the week--with much higher numbers than SYTYCD.
"This is great news to me, and hope that DWTS follows."
DWTS actually aired once a week during its first season. They announced results at the end of the show where they combined the viewer votes from the previous week with the judges scores from that night. The Australian version of DWTS did this as well and so did the final season of 'Australian Idol'.

I think the only downfall of no results show is we lose some of the great group numbers that could have been, "Homage To The Rabbits" is STILL a favorite.
I think we should go ahead and use this as the thread for season 9. I'm very excited for the show to start again. It's my favorite TV show of the summer.
I'm not a huge fan of the audition episodes, but there were some touching stories.
That little girl was adorable...and I usually hate little kids being indulged.

Last week had the best audition episode I've seen yet. Usually, I don't care for them and just sort of skim through them until Las Vegas, but this one had my attention all the way through. I loved Kat's attitude with the gerbil guy. What an idiot.

I agree, I usually skip the audition episodes--and I find Nigel harder and harder to take (the Canadian edition of the show seemed to have better judges who didn't make it so much about them--but a much more irritating host than Cat who is my favorite reality TV host)--but I actually mostly really enjoyed this one. Even the dancer who the judges were obviously going to be against due to his comments before--manipulative or not--I admit I bought up. It's nice to have the show back.
Indeed. Wouldn't miss it. This year I'm glad they are spending more time with the good and interesting dancers as opposed to offering the bad dancers up to be made fun of.

It's the only reality show I pay attention to, so watching it as well, but I usually save the episodes and take them over to my grandma's to watch. I'm glad this week is the Vegas episode--it seems like it's going to be an amazing season. (Let's see how many Broadway routines Tyce rips off and calls his own this year!)
