Founded in 1991, Atlanta Chinese Dance Company (ACDC) educates and entertains audiences of diverse backgrounds about Chinese and Chinese American history and culture through the art of Chinese dance.
Everyday Heroes features two Chinese dance dramas honoring everyday heroes of ancient and modern Chinese American stories as well as ten colorful dances celebrating diverse Chinese ethnic groups:
- “White Collar Wuxia” (new work) is inspired by a Chinese American civil rights attorney who in fighting for justice embodies the spirit of a martial arts hero. Featuring choreography by Kerry Lee and a guest performance by Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre’s Scott Wheet, the dance drama is a continuation of ACDC’s ongoing work to partner with artists across genre to develop innovative Chinese dance choreography sharing rarely told Chinese American stories.
- “Red Firecracker” (Atlanta premiere) is a family friendly dance drama about the origin story of the Chinese Lunar New Year presented in partnership with the internationally acclaimed Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. Guest Artist Yao-Zhong Zhang, a master Kunqu opera performer who hails from Shanghai, China, will fly down from New York to star in the lead role alongside a multigenerational cast of Atlanta dancers.
- The production will also feature ten colorful dances representing China’s Han ethnic majority and Miao, Dai, Mongolian, Wa, Uyghur, and Tibetan minorities.
