Since early 2025, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has undergone major changes following the Trump administration’s takeover of its leadership. Established as the nation’s cultural center through the National Cultural Center Act of 1958 and opened in 1971, the institution has long served as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, presenting programming in theater, ballet, dance, and more. Beginning with the removal of board members and Donald Trump assuming the role of chairman in 2025, the institution has faced ongoing restructuring, artist withdrawals, leadership departures, and programming shifts. Below is a timeline of key developments—from the initial overhaul through the Kennedy Center’s recently announced plan to shut down operations for two years.


2025

February 10, 2025 — Trump Administration Ousts 18 Kennedy Center Board Members and Chairman

  • The Trump administration removes a large portion of the Kennedy Center’s leadership.
  • The board now consists of 17 members, all Trump appointees.
  •  Trump criticizes the center's recent productions, deriding what he described as "woke" content. He has not visited the center himself but cites reports and plans to redirect the programming to align with his vision.

February 12, 2025 — Trump Assumes Chairmanship of Kennedy Center; Rutter Departs as President

  • Trump formally takes control as chairman while longtime president Deborah Rutter exits the organization.

February 12, 2025 — Shonda Rhimes, Rene Fleming and Ben Folds Resign From Kennedy Center Amid Trump Overhaul

  • Several high-profile figures resign from their roles within the Kennedy Center, including Board Treasurer Shonda Rhimes, National Symphony Orchestra Artistic Advisor Ben Folds, and Artistic Advisor-at-Large Renée Fleming.

February 13, 2025 — Kennedy Center Cancels Tour of New Children’s Musical FINN

  • Creators of the new children's musical Finn, which chronicles the coming-of-age journey of a young shark following his dreams, reveal that the upcoming Kennedy Center-produced tour has been cancelled. 

February 14, 2025 — Kennedy Center Removes LGBTQ Pride Concert Following Trump Takeover

  • The Kennedy Center removes the National Symphony Orchestra's concert "A Peacock Among Pigeons: Celebrating 50 Years of Pride" from its website. This event was part of the center’s acknowledgment of WorldPride 2025 and aimed to highlight LGBTQ+ identity and visibility through music.

February 17, 2025 — Dancers to Protest Trump Takeover Outside the Kennedy Center

  • Dancers protest Trump's involvement in the instituion, and the changes being made to the programming outside of the Kennedy Center. Keira Hartmendoza of Uprooted Dance states "It feels like a bit of an assault to come into the Kennedy Center and threaten our freedom of expression."

April 18, 2025 — More Staff Dismissals At Kennedy Center As Trump Takeover Continues

  • It is revealed that at least six staffers at the Kennedy Center were dismissed the previous week. The latest round of dismissals, marks the latest in a wave of cuts since President Trump assumed control of the institution.
  • Roughly 20 employees have now been let go, with the latest layoffs affecting teams in government relations, marketing, social media, and rentals.

June 3, 2025 — Following Trump Takeover Kennedy Center Subscription Sales Drop 36%

  • Subscription sales at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have decline by approximately 36% compared to the same period last year. The arts center has generated $2.66 million in revenue from subscriptions for the upcoming season, down from $4.41 million in 2023 - a decrease of about $1.6 million.

August 15, 2025 — Kennedy Center Senior VP of Artistic Programming to Step Down


August 25, 2025 Kennedy Center Appoints Stephen Nakagawa After He Criticizes 'Radical Leftist Ideologies in Ballet'

  • Stephen Nakagawa appointed Kennedy Center's new Director of Dance Programming. 
  • Nakagawa is appointed after he wrote a letter to Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell to voice his support of the Trump administration. He wrote that he was concerned by “radical leftist ideologies in ballet,” and was “increasingly concerned about the direction the ballet world is taking in America.”

September 11, 2025 — Kennedy Center Fires Head of Jazz Programming

  • The Kennedy Center dismisses Kevin Struthers, its longtime senior director of music programming, marking another significant staff change at the institution. 

October 31, 2025 — Kennedy Center Ticket Sales Continue To Drop Following Trump Takeover

  • Attendance for major productions between early September and mid-October reaches the lowest levels since the pandemic.

December 18, 2025 — Kennedy Center Board Votes to Rename Venue To 'Trump-Kennedy Center'

  • The board overseeing Washington’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts votes to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center.

December 25, 2025 — The Kennedy Center Annual Christmas Eve Concert Canceled Over Trump Name Change

  • The Kennedy Center's annual Christmas Eve jazz concert is canceled due to the event being renamed after Trump
  • Chuck Redd, the musician who has hosted the Jazz Jams concert at The Kennedy Center since 2006, says, "When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,"

December 29, 2025 — Trump-Hosted Kennedy Center Honors Draws Smallest Ratings Ever

  • The Kennedy Center Honors draws its smallest audience ever. The Donald Trump-hosted ceremony averaged an estimated 3.01 million viewers, a significant drop from the 4.1 million viewers in 2024. The CBS ceremony saw a 26% drop in ratings. 
  • Trump was the first president to ever host the ceremony. He kicked it off with a 12 minute speech, which CBS cut down to two minutes.

December 31, 2025 — Kennedy Center Amended Bylaws to Limit Votes to Trump-Appointed Board Members

  • Earlier this year, the Kennedy Center amended its bylaws to limit voting to board members appointed by President Trump, ultimately leading to the renaming of the historic performing arts center.
  • New rules were adopted in May, which make votes from ex officio members—that is, board members appointed by Congress—ineligible to count towards a quorum. As a result, the outcome of a vote would reflect those made only by board members appointed by the President.

2026

January 2, 2026 — Stephen Schwartz Pulls Out of Washington National Opera Gala at Kennedy Center

  • Stephen Schwartz, who was previously set to host the Washington National Opera Gala at the Kennedy Center on May 16, drops out of the event after President Donald Trump's name was added to the building.

January 6, 2026 — Musician Béla Fleck Cancels Kennedy Center Appearance

  • Béla Fleck cancels upcoming appearance at Kennedy Center after a recent board vote resulted in former President Donald Trump’s name being attached to the institution.

  • In a statement shared on social media, Fleck explains his decision to withdraw from a scheduled performance with the National Symphony Orchestra. “I have withdrawn from my upcoming performance with the NSO at The Kennedy Center. Performing there has become charged and political, at an institution where the focus should be on the music,” Fleck said. He adds, “I look forward to playing with the NSO another time in the future when we can together share and celebrate art.”

January 9, 2026 — Washington National Opera Announces Plans to Leave the Kennedy Center


January 14, 2026 — Annual MLK Concert Relocates From Kennedy Center After 23 Years

  • The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day concert held in Washington, D.C., will no longer take place at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after more than two decades.
  • Organizers confirm the 2026 concert will instead be held at Washington’s historic Howard Theatre. Georgetown University cited cost savings as the primary reason for the move. 

January 16, 2026 — Martha Graham Dance Company Cancels Kennedy Center Engagement

  • The Martha Graham Dance Company cancels its scheduled April engagement at the Kennedy Center, removing the stop from its nationwide centennial tour.

January 20, 2026 — Seattle Children’s Theatre Withdraws From Upcoming Kennedy Center Engagement


January 28, 2026 — Kevin Couch Resigns as Kennedy Center Programming SVP Weeks After Appointment


February 27, 2026 — Kennedy Center Honors to Be Renamed Trump Kennedy Center Honors for 2026 Ceremony

  • The annual honors ceremony at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will be renamed the “Trump Kennedy Center Honors".

  • The change follows the board’s vote late last year to rename the Washington institution the Trump-Kennedy Center. A representative for the center says the honors’ rebranding “automatically follows” that of the institution.


March 6, 2026 — National Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Jean Davidson to Step Down Amid Turmoil at Kennedy Center

  • Jean Davidson, executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra, announces that she will step down from her position at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after less than three years in the role. Davidson will leave in May to become president and chief executive of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

March 13, 2026 — Richard Grenell Expected to Shift Out of Kennedy Center Leadership

  • Richard Grenell is expected to transition out of his role as president of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Grenell took over leadership of the performing arts venue in February 2025 as part of a broader leadership shake-up tied to Trump’s plans for the institution.

March 16, 2026 — Kennedy Center Board Votes To Shut Down For Two Years

  • The board of trustees of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts approves a plan to close the Washington, D.C. venue for two years to undergo renovations.
  • The Kennedy Center says the temporary shutdown is intended to allow renovation work to proceed more quickly. Trump says that materials for the project, including new seating and marble, have already been purchased.
