With school out and a newfound amount of free time, summer is the perfect time to participate in new theater activities and expand your horizons. Summer theater opportunities can be found in a variety of locations and formats. The most important step is knowing where to find these opportunities! Some schools will have summer theater opportunities for local students. To see if any local school districts are running musical summer camps, check their district recreation site or newsletter.

A great place to find summer theater opportunities is at your local community theaters. Many community theaters host youth theater camps or put on shows over the summer. Information regarding auditions for productions and registration for camps can likely be found on the theater’s website. Doing a show at a community theater over the summer is a great way to gain experience and expand your resume.

Regional and professional theaters also tend to host camps or conservatories over the summer. Attending a training conservatory is a fantastic way to make connections and gain feedback from professionals in the industry. More prestigious conservatories require interested performers to audition for a spot in the program.

Colleges and universities with musical theater programs also host conservatories over summer break. This will allow you to get an idea of what attending college for musical theater would be like. Most college summer programs even let their participants stay in dorms and live on campus. College summer programs also frequently require students to audition to be given a spot in the program.

Summer can be a fantastic time to strengthen your skills and make new connections in the theater world. Planning your summer activities early can make sure you have the best summer possible.
