Now that the 2012 awards season has come to a close, BroadwayWorld is looking ahead to an exciting season coming up. This summer/fall Broadway will welcome a plethora of productions - from star-studded revivals to exciting new musicals. Below, we bring you the line-up of officially announced upcoming shows (still subject to change).

FELA!

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

The National Theatre of Great Britain's FELA!, currently on a multi-city world tour, will return to Broadway for a limited run of 32 performances this summer. Exploring the extravagant world of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, this provocative hybrid of dance, theatre, music, biography and a party like no-other is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Bill T. Jones, with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones. The world renowned Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of AaRon Johnson, again perform Kuti’s rousing music live onstage.

BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL

St. James Theatre

BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL is the new musical comedy that raises the stakes on over-the-top team rivalries. Set against the world of competitive cheerleading, this powerhouse new show hilariously proves that winning isn’t everything when it means losing something - or someone - you really care about. BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL combines an exciting fresh sound, gravity-defying choreography, and a thrilling story to create a total theatrical event worth cheering for.

CHAPLIN
Previews Begin - 8/21

Ethel Barrymore Theatre

CHAPLIN is a new musical depicting the life of film icon Charlie Chaplin, with music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis and book by three-time Tony Award-winner Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Christopher Curtis. Acclaimed director/choreographer Warren Carlyle (Finian’s Rainbow, Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway) directs and choreographs the production. Rob McClure, who originated the role of Chaplin at the La Jolla Playhouse, will lead the new Broadway production.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

Manhattan Theatre Club will present the American premiere of Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s new version of AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt, The Royal Family, The Whipping Man, Defiance). Starring four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE is an incisive tale about the high price of free expression.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC

American Airlines Theatre

Roundabout Theatre Company will feature Tony® Award winner Douglas Hodge in a new Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, with a translation by Ranjit Bolt and directed by Jamie Lloyd. A enduring masterwork with some of the wittiest lines ever written for the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac is a clever and touching story about the power of love, the art of wordplay and the joy of finding what you’ve always wanted right under your nose.

GRACE
Previews Begin- 9/14

GRACE, the acclaimed American play by Award-winning writer Craig Wright (Mistakes Were Made, Recent Tragic Events, Lady; “Six Feet Under”), will be directed by Dexter Bullard (Tracy Letts’ BUG)  and will feature an all-star cast that includes Paul Rudd and Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon, with Kate Arrington and seven-time Emmy Award®-winner Edward Asner, who returns to Broadway for the first time in nearly 25 years. With a grippingly innovative dramatic structure, Grace follows a wide-eyed young couple (Rudd & Arrington) as they start a new life in sunny, promise-filled Florida, with big plans to open a chain of Gospel motels. An agitated neighbor (Shannon) and a caustic exterminator (Asner) complete the eclectic foursome as destinies collide in this intensely entertaining and suspenseful journey to The Edge of your seat.

WHO'S AFRAID OF Virginia Woolf?

Steppenwolf's production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, directed by Pam MacKinnon moves to Broadway this fall. On the campus of a small New England college, George and Martha invite a new professor and his wife home for a nightcap. As the cocktails flow, the young couple finds themselves caught in the crossfire of a savage marital war where the combatants attack the self-deceptions they forged for their own survival. Steppenwolf ensemble members Tracy Letts and Amy Morton face off as one of theatre's most notoriously dysfunctional couples in Albee's hilarious and harrowing masterpiece.

ANNIE

ANNIE, the new production of the classic Tony Award®-winning musical, will star two-time Tony Award® winner Katie Finneran as Miss Hannigan, Australian star Anthony Warlow making his Broadway debut as Daddy Warbucks and 11-year-old Lilla Crawford as Annie, with Brynn O’Malley (Wicked, Hairspray) as Grace Farrell, Daddy Warbucks’ devoted personal secretary, Clarke Thorell (Hairspray, Mamma Mia!) as Rooster Hannigan, Miss Hannigan’s ne’er-do-well brother and J. Elaine Marcos (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, A Chorus Line) as Lily St. Regis, Rooster’s floozy girlfriend.

REBECCA

Broadhurst Theatre

REBECCA, the new musical based on the classic novel by Daphne Du Maurier novel (and later turned into an Oscar-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock) which was postponed earlier this year, will open this fall. REBECCA is the story of Maxim de Winter, his new wife (“I”) and Mrs. Danvers, the controlling and manipulative housekeeper of Maxim’s West Country estate of Manderley – where the memory of his first wife, the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca, still casts a shadow.

GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS

Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre

Al Pacino will return to Broadway to star in David Mamet’s acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning drama GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Pacino, who was nominated for an Oscar for portraying the role of Ricky Roma in the film version, will now take on the role of Shelly Levene alongside Bobby Cannavale as Roma. Tony Award-winning director, Daniel Sullivan (The Columnist, The Merchant of Venice, Time Stands Still, Proof) will direct.

A CHRISTMAS STORY: THE MUSICAL

A Christmas Story, The Musical!, which toured the US last year, will land on Broadway this holiday season. The production, which begins rehearsals in October, will be directed by John Rando, with music direction by Ian Eisendrath and choreography by Warren Carlyle. A Christmas Story features a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Joseph Robinette. The story from a cherished movie classic that's enchanted millions is now a musical spectacular. In 1940's Indiana, a bespectacled boy named Ralphie has a big imagination and one wish for Christmas-a Red Ryder BB Gun.

GOLDEN BOY

Lincoln Center Theater will present Clifford Odets’ classic GOLDEN BOY, to be directed by Bartlett Sher. It is the story of Joe Bonaparte, a young, gifted violinist who is torn between pursuing a career in music and earning big money as a prize fighter. This will be a rare Broadway production for the Odets’ classic which originally premiered on Broadway in 1937 at the Belasco Theatre and has only been revived once.

THE ANARCHIST

Lyceum Theatre

Three-time Academy Award nominee Debra Winger will be making her Broadway debut in the American premiere of THE ANARCHIST, a new play written and directed by David Mamet the new play about politics, money, religion and sex. Winger will star alongside previous announced two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone in this two-character play.

The Other Place

Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

Three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Laurie Metcalf stars in MTC’s Broadway-premiere production of The Other Place, a riveting new thriller by fast-rising playwright Sharr White and directed by 2-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello. Metcalf plays Juliana Smithton, a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a much older man and her own health is in jeopardy. But in this brilliantly crafted work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs with fiction, past collides with present and the elusive truth about Juliana boils to the surface.

THE HEIRESS

Written by Ruth Goetz & Augustus Goetz, The Heiress will be directed by Tony Award nominated playwright and director Moisés KaufmanDan Stevens, star of the Golden Globe-winning series “Downton Abbey,” will play the role of “Morris Townsend” opposite Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain (Catherine Sloper) and Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner David Strathairn (Dr. Austin Sloper) in the Tony Award-winning play.

Laura Osnes will play Cinderella and Santino Fontana will portray the Prince in the new Broadway-bound production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA. This new production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and original book by Oscar Hammerstein II. Mark Brokaw directs.

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

Chita Rivera returns to Broadway as “Princess Puffer” in a new production of Rupert Holmes’ Tony® Award winning musical comedy THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD; musical direction by Paul Gemignani & directed by Roundabout’s Adams Associate Artistic Director Scott Ellis. The whodunit rollicking play-within-a-musical is the winner of five Tony® Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Rupert Holmes) and Best Original Score (Rupert Holmes).

HANDS ON A HARDBODY

Inspired by true events and based on S.R. Bindler and Kevin Morris’ acclaimed 1997 documentary of the same name, the musical features a book by Doug Wright (Pulitzer Prize winner, I Am My Own Wife), lyrics by Amanda Green (Bring It On: The Musical), and music by Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Amanda Green. Directed by Neil Pepe (Broadway’s Speed-The-Plow) with musical staging by Benjamin Millepied (BLACK SWAN), the world premiere production of HANDS ON A HARDBODY opened Saturday, May 12 at La Jolla Playhouse.

Kathie Lee Gifford, David Friedman and David Pomeranz's THE AIMEE PROJECT is a new musical based on the life of Aimee Semple McPherson, the world's first media superstar evangelist whose passion for saving souls equaled her passion for making headlines. Set in 1920's Los Angeles, holiness collides with Hollywood in the extraordinary tale of one woman's charismatic rise to fame amidst scandalous love affairs and growing controversy, inevitably ending in her much-publicized fall from grace.
