Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, is thrilled to announce that in last night's annual Dora Award ceremonies, Soulpepper's production of Parfumerie took home three Dora Awards‚ winning Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction by Morris Panych and Outstanding Set Design by Ken MacDonald. Soulpepper founding member Diego Matamoros also took home his fourth Dora award for his leading performance as George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? giving Soulpepper a total of four Doras.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Schultz thanked the Toronto theatre community for honouring Soulpepper and acknowledged the perseverance of actress Brenda Robins in bringing Parfumerie to life. Ms. Robins, a fan of golden age movies, discovered that the classic film Shop Around the Corner was inspired by a play by Hungarian master playwright Miklos Laszlo. A charming story about two clerks in a perfume shop in Budapest that can't stand each other, but unknowingly exchange love letters at night as anonymous penpals, Parfumerie is also the inspiration for the movies The Good Old Summertime and You've Got Mail and the musical She Loves Me.

Ms. Robins (in her writing debut) and Adam Pettle adapted the play from the literal Hungarian translation and it premiered at the Young Centre on December 2, 2009. A hit with audiences and critics alike, Parfumerie played to sold out houses for its four-week run. Mr. Schultz assured the Dora audience that Parfumerie will return to the Soulpepper stage in a future season.

Soulpepper Theatre Company is an artist-founded, classical repertory theatre company with a three-tiered mandate: to present the world's greatest stories in vital Canadian interpretations; to train a new generation of theatre artists; and to inspire and enrich youth through mentorship and access programs
