Starlight Theatre Announces 2017 Blue Star Awards

Yesterday, high school theatre students and instructors across metropolitan Kansas City and in neighboring communities received the good news that they had received nominations for the 15th Anniversary Blue Star Awards from Starlight Theatre. Starlight leaders, staff and board members personally delivered 132 nominations to 42 area high schools. On Thursday night, May 25, winners of the 2017 Blue Star Awards will receive their honors in a public ceremony on Starlight Theatre's Cohen Community Stage. (more...)

Harburg, directed by Creative Cauldron Artistic Associate, Matt Conner. The story is the whirlwind journey of a Kansas farm girl, Dorothy, swept away to the magical Land of Oz where she meets a cast of iconic characters, like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, on her journey home. Creative Cauldron will reimagine what the Library of Congress called 'America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale' within their intimate black box theatre, featuring a virtuosic cast of local talent and an ensemble cast drawn from Creative Cauldron's new Professional Musical Theatre Workshop. Garden Theatre Announces 2017 Summer Movie Series

Good Triumphs Over All in WICKED. It's hard to know if in 1900 L. Frank Baum ever imagined there would be an afterlife to his children's book 'The Wizard of Oz,' but in 1939 MGM capitalized on book's wide appeal and their film version has became a staple in every child's movie experience. Flash forward 64 years to what can best be described as a prequel to Dorothy's famous journey, and you have the megamusical WICKED, which has become almost as popular as the MGM film. (more...)

A cyclone of camp with a true gift for one-liners and an even stronger voice, Courtney Act followed the yellow brick road past the crowd to hit the stage in THE GIRL FROM OZ. Despite several homages to The Wizard of Oz, the May 4 show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre was centered on that other, no less magical Oz: Australia.
