BWW News: A Look at the State of the Theatre in DC with Jane Horwitz, Nelson Pressley and Celia Wren
by Elliot Lanes - Jan 9, 2017

For theatre lovers in our area, we always look forward to what our theatre companies have in store for us in their upcoming seasons. We look to see if there are any trends that stand out to us as audience members. We also see growth in many companies with each new season of shows. Anyone that's been following DC theatre for a while will notice how things have changed in the last twenty or thirty years. One of the biggest examples of this would be the clean up and revitalization of 14th Street, which had direct implications for Studio Theatre and Source. (more...)

Dance Mission Theatre transforms into a time machine in SATIN & SWING
by BWW News Desk - Jan 29, 2017

SOULSKIN Dance is proud to present a brand new work SATIN & SWING as part of their 4th Season in San Francisco. Artistic Director and Choreographer Adrianna Thompson seeks to engage audiences in a study of two eras, the 1920s and the present. Dance Mission Theatre transforms into a time machine, transporting us back to the 1920s. Glitz and glam sparkle from the dingy corners of a speakeasy. Raucous jazz blares, bringing bejeweled and sequined dancing flapper girls to life. An evening of indulgence has begun. The entry notes of Prince's 'Erotic City' ring in your ears, an echo from another time. Suddenly you notice the writing on the wall. The crash of overindulgence is imminent. (more...)

BWW Review: Paramount's KING AND I Full of Heart, Talent, Et Cetera
by Jay Irwin - Jan 25, 2017

I've never been a huge fan of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I", currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. It's kind of dated, the songs, while many are classics, don't really move the story along, and plot points often come out of nowhere, plus it's one of those staples from The Golden Age of musicals that's just been done to death. But as much as it's not one of my favorites, this current production was so filled with heart, talent and incredible staging that even I have developed a new appreciation for it. (more...)

THE BEACH BOYS to Perform with the Pacific Symphony, 3/3-4
by BWW News Desk - Feb 8, 2017

At the forefront of The Golden Age of rock 'n' roll, before The Beatles made their U.S. debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964, there was The Beach Boys, scoring hit after hit. And now the quintessential surf band makes its most recent splash by bringing a sure-to-sell-out evening of their best-loved songs to Pacific Symphony Pops! Having made their mark singing about “California Girls,” it seems particularly appropriate that America's most popular group throughout the 1960s is planning a visit to Orange County. While The Beach Boys of today bear little physical resemblance to the five cherubic California kids who first hit it big five decades ago, the music is a dead-ringer and will take the audience back to a time of innocence and fun in the sun with songs such as “God Only Knows,” “Don't Worry Baby” and “You're So Good to Me.” (more...)

BWW Review: CIRCUS 1903 Recreates the Golden Age of Circus at the Hollywood Pantages
by Ellen Dostal - Feb 16, 2017

If Dorothy in THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ had run away from home and found this traveling circus instead of Professor Marvel and his crystal ball, she might never have gotten swept up in a twister and landed in Munchkinland. Instead, she might have become part of a new family, the kind that traveled the dust bowl in the early part of the twentieth century and instilled a sense of wonder in every child who was lucky enough to hear that the circus was coming to town.
