2017 Sundance Film Festival Awards Celebrate Global Independent Creative

After 10 days, 119 feature films and three feet of snow, an evening of humor and humanity marked the 2017 Sundance Film Festival's Awards Ceremony, with host Jessica Williams emceeing and jurors presenting 27 prizes for feature filmmaking in Park City, Utah. Honorees, named in total below, range from sharp comedies to provocative and timely documentaries and represent new achievements in global independent storytelling. Human stories prevailed across categories, with Grand Jury Prizes awarded to Dina (U.S. Documentary), Last Men in Aleppo (World Documentary), I don't feel at home in this world anymore. (U.S. Dramatic) and The Nile Hilton Incident (World Dramatic). Chasing Coral, showcased in the Festival's environmental program The New Climate, won an Audience Award in the U.S. Documentary category. SBCO Releases Music Study Results on Cognitive Benefits of Classical Music

Live classical music performances offer greater therapeutic value for individuals suffering cognitive or neurological impairment than do classical music recordings, according to the results of an innovative study recently undertaken by the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra (SBCO). Titled "Classical Connections," the effort involved chamber music performances for elderly dementia patients by SBCO musicians over a four-week period at Santa Barbara's Friendship Center Adult Day Care, a project collaborator. According to lead researcher Lori Sunshine, some 95 percent of study participants evinced positive emotional, social, and physical responses to the performances, whereas observable responses to recordings were both less evident and less expressive. The SBCO plans to launch a follow-up study this spring. (more...)

Lillian Hellman's 1941 play WATCH ON THE RHINE isn't often produced, but it's certainly a relevant one in today's troubling times. As directed in the round by Jackie Maxwell at Arena Stage, it's probably one of the best examples of a scintillating, well-written script being brought to the stage by a uniformly excellent cast.
