BWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic ElementsBWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic Elements
by Frances Steiner - Mar 30, 2015

Although Jessica Lang Dance was founded in 2011, Artistic Director Jessica Lang is no newcomer to the dance scene. Lang, a disciple of Twyla Tharp, is on the faculty of American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and has been an active choreographer since 1999. Lang's signature style marries classical movements with a "striking design element." This theme played out through Jessica Lang Dance's performance at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, an evening co-presented with Washington Performing Arts and City Dance. The graphic component in particular was inconsistent throughout the evening and did not always further Lang's artistic vision. (more...)

by Andrew Martin - Mar 29, 2015

From the Oscars to the Tonys, the Grammys to Emmys, awards ceremonies are always a hit-or-miss situation. Either the event is absolutely excellent or ends with spectators saying, 'Well, they'll do a better job with it next year.' The 2015 MAC Awards, presented by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs, and held once again this year at BB King's on West 42nd Street, absolutely fell into the former category. It was a splendid affair (albeit it's usual 3-plus hours) that was expertly directed by MAC President Lennie Watts. (more...)

Actor Returning to RCP Stage 60 Years After First PerformanceActor Returning to RCP Stage 60 Years After First Performance
by BWW News Desk - Apr 9, 2015

February, 1955: 'Is there a doctor in the house?' This, the oldest theatrical cliche, was uttered by Harriet 'Hattie' Warren, after the curtain was rung down during the first act of the opening performance of 'The Flying Geraldos', our 1955 Rotary show (an annual benefit for Rotary's Sunshine Camp). The line got a big laugh, but for once it was said in earnest. Seems one of the trapeze performers in this play about the circus flopped on his face, knocking his unconscious, hence Hattie's request for medical assistance. The story stuck with Mrs. Warren for the rest of her 20 years as RCP Artistic Director. (more...)

by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 7, 2015

Today we are continuing our expansive ongoing discussion with Tony Award-winning scenic design visionary Beowulf Boritt. Continuing the exhaustive discussion of this week's spectacular one night only concert event PARADE, Boritt outlines the visual high-points of the evening as well as offers an explanation of the impetus for many of the ideas behind the inventive design for the unique event. Additionally, Boritt opens up about his other work at Lincoln Center over the years, including Manhattan Concert Productions presentation of RAGTIME and his Tony Award-winning work on the Moss Hart drama ACT ONE, which will be shown on PBS as part of LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER later this year. Furthermore, Boritt shines a light on his multiple other current musicals running or opening soon - the revival of ON THE TOWN on Broadway, plus HAND TO GOD opening soon and Off-Broadway's CLINTON: THE MUSICAL. Plus, Boritt details his work on a dizzying array of current tours and recent mainstage mountings of musicals ranging from the national tours of ANNIE and JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT to his work on LITTLE MISS Sunshine, LITTLE DANCER, THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS in the West End and far beyond. As if all that were not enough, Boritt also looks ahead to the 2016 Tokyo production of the Harold Prince revue PRINCE OF BROADWAY and comments on rumors of an impending New York return of THE TOXIC AVENGER while sharing first news on his involvement with a number of new productions including the Keira Knightley-led revival of THERESE RAQUIN and the forthcoming revival of A BRONX TALE. All of that and much, much more in this concluding portion of our extended chat with one of Broadway's best visual artists. (more...)

CHARITY THE GIFTS OF GIVING is ReleasedCHARITY THE GIFTS OF GIVING is Released
by BWW News Desk - Apr 15, 2015

Avid philanthropist and budding author Garret Biss recently released a thought-provoking new book entitled 'Charity The Gifts of Giving.' (http://amzn.to/1JbN2o7%22) The unique book discusses how charitable giving, kindness and acts of generosity have an impact not just on recipients, but also on donors. Giving time, money and other resources generates positive energy, feelings of gratitude, a sense of control and many other benefits, according to the book. Charitable giving is a concept everyone understands and often engages in, but people seldom consider-and discuss-the positive effect that practicing benevolence has on donors. This is the main impetus behind 'Charity The Gifts of Giving,' says Biss. 'My purpose for this book was to inspire more involvement with charity and selfless acts in everyone's life,' he says. 'If speaking about how these acts benefit us is one way to inspire greater generosity, then this is a story that must be told for the benefit of each of us and all of us.' 'Charity The Gifts of Giving' is designed to focus on a different perspective on philanthropy. The book contains a wealth of insights and information to help readers capitalize on the benefits of charitable giving. For example, it discusses how generosity can help combat anxiety and manage stress, practical ways to give on any budget, websites that help donors give quickly and easily in any way they choose, and how to create a more fulfilling life experience and more joyful interaction with others. Biss's book is available at Amazon.com, where it is already being well-received by readers. Here are just some of the favorable comments from reviewers: * 'I have already recommend this book to many of my friends and will continue to. It's amazing how a simple act of kindness can promulgate happiness to everyone around the giver and the recipient, the message. I this book is simple but speaks volumes to the reader.' (Justin Lopez) * 'This is an inspiring, honest look at the impact of giving and generosity on one's personal perspective, mindset, and life.' (Dawn Michel) * 'Biss shares a very interesting and unique spin on the act of giving and contribution. I especially liked the idea of making donations as a way of overcoming stress and even depression.' (Coach Bobby G) * 'After reading his book, I'm closer to walking in my purpose and he simply explains why we all should give of ourselves in order to make this a better world. So, take the opportunity to read this book, and your life just simply can't be the same.' (Corey Prudie) * 'This was a great read and a great reflection on what is at the heart of giving.' (C and J) 'Charity The Gifts of Giving' is available on Amazon in three formats: Kindle for $3.99; audible audio edition for $6.08; and paperback for $8.95. The proceeds from each copy sold will be used to further the efforts of One Million Goal Inc. Established by Biss, One Million Goal Inc. is working to generate enough money and awareness to make a difference with the world's water problem. As signified by its name, the goal of the non-profit organization is to bring drinking water to one million men, women and children. The need is great, as almost 750 million people lack access to clean drinking water and an estimated 1,700 children die every day from water-related illnesses before they reach their fifth birthday. Biss has concentrated much of his philanthropic efforts toward addressing the world's water crisis. His passion in this area is fueled by his belief that water is the most basic of human needs. Biss feels water is not only a necessity for life, but is also vital for making the world a better place. 'Even if you have the seed, the soil and the Sunshine, the miracle of life doesn't begin until you add water,' he says. 'Fighting tyranny, poverty or disease will provide no enduring cure for suffering if we don't start by providing water.' There is also a broader issue at stake, Biss says. 'Not only is the water crisis a thirst issue, it is also a gender equality issue, a health issue, a poverty issue, an education issue, a terrorism issue, as well as many more issues,' he explains. To learn more about Biss's efforts to combat the world's water problem, please visit http://www.onemilliongoal.org.
