"Tartuffe, or the Imposter," is perhaps Moliere's most famous comic masterpiece. The plot revolves around a pompous head of household taken in by a cunning charlatan, under the religious cloak of piety. Tartuffe seeks to marry his benefactor's daughter, seduce his wife and gain the family fortune. Moliere gives us a farce with a scathing wit as he roasts religion, hypocrisy and sexual deceit. Now in its ninth season, the critically acclaimed Broadway By The YearŽ series is known for great signing and spectacular Broadway dancing. A rare collection of complete live recordings of classic American musical theater will be made available over the next four years to visitors at two major venues: Goodspeed Musicals' Scherer Library of Musical Theatre in East Haddam, Connecticut, and Cleveland Public Library in Cleveland, Ohio. Since December 28th was my birthday I looked around for something interesting to write about. And I did. But it happened on December 27, the same day Show Boat opened. But Show Boat opened in 1927 and this one in 1944. It was a musical titled Sing Out Sweet Land. What? Yes, I know that no one remembers it, let alone hearing about it), but after looking at some very impressive credits I saw that Charles Weidman had choreographed the production. (more...)
