They revert to their childhood names—Maxie, Petie, Mitchie—these three buddies, who haven’t seen each other since their high school graduation party 20 years ago. It’s time to get wasted and relive the fun-the sunlit days of autumn leaves, moon pies and girls in lambswool sweaters. But it’s risky, trying to get in touch with—maybe even understand—their past selves. Memories aren’t always reliable, hurt runs deep and apologies come hard in this scathingly funny look at high school reunions and the complex nature of male friendship.

Bands and trends might come and go, but some of it is meant to stay. Far beyond a mere jolt to the music world or a fad phenomenon, Magma imposed themselves as early as the 1970's thanks to their unconventional and cliche-free approach to music. An unparalleled music, which is as violent as it is clever. Founded by drummer and singer Christian Vander, the band quickly set itself apart from its contemporaries through heavy and ruthless polyrhythmic beats. With a wide range of contemporary musical greats at his side, Vander remains a fine mentor from the likes of Miles Davis. (more...)

BWW Review: IMOGEN, Shakespeare's Globe, 23 September 2016
by Marianka Swain - Sep 26, 2016

The Globe is breaking bad. Cymbeline comes to us as Imogen - subtitled Renamed and Reclaimed, properly recognising that Imogen has far more to say than her royal father - but that's just the start of Matthew Dunster's bold, urban revamp. The king runs a coke empire. The exiles have a weed greenhouse. The court dresses in Adidas tracksuits, Cloten is a football hooligan, while Skepta and Sicario soundtrack each strip lighting-illuminated tableau, revealed by the parting of slaughterhouse plastic curtains. (more...)

BWW Review: 6th Annual Ten-Tucky Festival of Shorts
by Keith Waits - Sep 19, 2016

Ten-minute play festivals are often populated by material that cannot be strictly classified as plays. But the academic distinction between sketch and fully formed play may reasonably give way to a simpler, more binary metric: it either works or it doesn't. Some of the finest writing in this sixth year of shorts produced by The Bard's Town feels as if they are either lifted from a longer piece or are the seeds of a larger story. (more...)

BWW Review: BLACKBIRD is Dark, Deep and Compelling at Off Broadway, Sydney Fringe
by Brodie Paparella - Sep 16, 2016

The beauty of Fringe festival is an opportunity for emerging talent to be revealed amidst an energy of mystery and excitement about which fresh face might be a rising star in the diverse and strong community of local artists. Blackbird definitely fit the bill for such discovery, featuring at the tucked-away Off Broaday venue in Annandale. There in amongst the contemporary pop art outside, and the trashy cafeteria set inside, was woven a dark and devious tale of a Reunion between a man seeking a new future, and the young woman who holds all the keys to redemption of them both. Fifteen years prior to her showing up at his workplace, Una was Ray's pre-teen lover whom he abandoned during a romantic getaway. For him, a swift prison stint followed by a new life and lifetime of secrecy, but for her, the scorn and scandal in her hometown that appears to have left her in bitter ruin. Together they will unravel their relationship and leave audiences next to breathless. (more...)
