Citrus Singers Set for ON THE SPOT at Broadway Comedy Club
by BWW News Desk - May 31, 2016

'On the Spot' is the only show in New York City that combines the dulcet tones of cabaret, with frantic hilarity of improv comedy. It has been in existence for over a year, and will soon celebrate the six-month anniversary of its open ended weekly run at the Broadway Comedy Club. It has an excellent critical reputation, being described as 'spot-on', 'fun-filled', 'top-notch' and 'laugh-out-loud'. As well as being 'a show that takes 'anything for a laugh' to new heights of bravery!' (Hi! Drama, Ludus NYC, Culture Catch) Audiences love it, and singers between shows love coming down between gigs to contribute to the fun. Guest artists have included Brian Falduto, better known as the hilarious young stylist 'Fancypants' in Richard Linklater's 'School of Rock', as well as Amanda Nicholas, one of the stars of cult Off-Broadway Sensation 'Bayside! The Musical!, and Billboard Top 40 singer Janine Berenson. It's clearly a show with staying power. (more...)

BWW Interview: Choreographer Jennifer Paulson-Lee Talks YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN
by Bob Rizzo - May 23, 2016

It's only a few moments before choreographer Jennifer Paulson- Lee will watch her cast give the press a 'sneak peek' of their rehearsals. They're preparing to perform three musical numbers from 'You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown' which will be presented at The York Theatre beginning this week for a limited engagement. What's unique about this revival is the fact that a pint-sized cast of 9 to 13 year olds is performing all the roles. But don't let their ages fool you. This young bunch of talented thespians has a list of professional credits that any seasoned 35-year-old performer would envy. As the press files into the theatre, Paulson-Lee is busy making last minute corrections on her young charges. She is gentle and soft-spoken yet gets her point across to these eager children who take her notes and make the adjustments On the Spot. The mutual love and admiration between this gang of peanuts and their dance master is all too evident. (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre Project Welcomes Back Happenstance With BROUHAHA
by Cybele Pomeroy - May 10, 2016

The performers of Happenstance Theater engage, intrigue, cavort, emote and display both physical precision and a remarkable range of organically produced sound effects. BROUHAHA's story, insofar as there is a story, lies in the development of the relationship between this cadre of classical clowns and the newcomers- that is to say, us, the audience. We become conspirators in the greatest of comi-tragic secrets: even in the direst of times, there is yet opportunity for playfulness and joy. (more...)

BWW Review: Buckley and York Bring an Emotionally Engaging West Coast premiere GREY GARDENS to the Ahmanson
by Don Grigware - Jul 14, 2016

True-to-life eccentrics tend to make the most riveting dramatic/comedic characters. In 1975 Albert and David Maysles produced an award-winning documentary called Grey Gardens about Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (Big Edie) and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie), aunt and cousin respectively of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The film was eventually rated among the top 10 greatest documentaries of all time, and provided the basis for a the musical of the same name, produced off and on Broadway in 2006. The musical, with book by Doug Wright, music by Scott Frankel and lyrics by Michael Korie, shows the socialite family in its heyday in East Hampton, New York in Act One. Act Two is their demise into total poverty. The estate inhabited by the reclusive mother and daughter combo was condemned by the board of health, and the two women gained notoriety for their delusional, certifiable behavior. Now at the Ahmanson through August 14, Grey Gardens explores the fiercely fiery relationship between the two Edies, offering Betty Buckley (older Big Edie) and Rachel York (younger Big Edie/Little Edie) their most cherished roles to date.
