USA Masters Track Champs Comes to Albuquerque, 3/4

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., March 2, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ The USA Track & Field National Masters Indoor Championships will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center Friday-Sunday March 4-6, with five Olympians, including 1984 Flagbearer/three-time Olympic thrower Ed Burke, still setting age records, more than 30 world champions, and over 40 New Mexico participants including many of the star athletes among the nearly 800 participants from across the nation. Media and the public are welcome to attend the events free, with finals beginning 8:00 AM each day to 4:30 PM Friday, 5:00 PM Saturday, and 2:15 PM Sunday. This is only the second time the national championship meet has been held in Albuquerque and the first time since 2011, five years ago. Freddy Cole opened at Birdland last night and BroadwayWorld was there. The New York Times calls Freddy Cole, 'the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.'  Last evening, the Apollo Theater celebrated its 11th Annual Spring Gala raising $1.7M for its year-round artistic and community programming initiatives.  The concert portion of the evening was hosted by LL COOL J, and opened with the dynamic dancing duo Laurent & Larry Bourgeois of Les Twins.  The concert also featured performances by legendary R&B group, The O'Jays including rousing version of Love Train, The Backstabbers, For the Love of Money and more.  Rising star vocalist, Leon Bridges brought the crowd to its feet with a performance of Mustang Sally and vocalist Andra Day performed her hit song City Burns,followed by a touching performance of Unforgettable in tribute to legendary songstress Natalie Cole. Host LL COOL J also joined DJ D-Nice for a tribute to Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest - one of several iconic artists lost in 2016.  (more...)
