by Billie Roe - Nov 26, 2014

According to mythology, the 'Phoenix' was a bird of great beauty, said to have lived 1,000 years in the Arabian wilderness. The Phoenix burns itself to ashes on an ancient funeral pyre, only to rise again from those ashes with the renewed exuberance of youth. Its renewed life cycle symbolizes the immortality of the spirit, the rebirth of idealism, the essence of creativity, and the aura of eternal hope. With her new show at the Laurie Beechman, Visible Phoenix (which opened October 17 and returned last Friday night), multi-award winner Carolyn Montgomery-Forant has returned to the cabaret stage (after a 14-year hiatus to raise her son and run a cafe business) as the very personification of that rare beautiful bird. Pacific Northwest Ballet to Present SWAN LAKE, 4/10Pacific Northwest Ballet to Present SWAN LAKE, 4/10
by BWW News Desk - Mar 24, 2015

SEATTLE, WA - Pacific Northwest Ballet's Swan Lake, choreographed by Founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell, returns to the McCaw Hall stage as the fifth offering of PNB's 2014-15 season. This beloved story ballet, revered by audiences and dancers alike, is classical ballet at its very best. Sumptuous scenery, costumes, and lighting, and an achingly beautiful Tchaikovsky score, set the stage for the ethereal corps de ballet and the ultimate challenge for ballerinas all over the world—the dual role of Odette, trapped in the body of a white swan until the oath of her true love sets her free; and Odile, the “Black Swan” temptress. With an added performance on opening weekend, Swan Lake runs for nine performances only, from April 10 through 19 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Tickets start at $30. For more information, contact the PNB Box Office at 206.441.2424, in person at 301 Mercer Street, or online at PNB.org. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Mar 18, 2015

Boeing, Boeing is a bedroom farce originally written in French by Marc Camoletti in 1961 and quickly adapted onto the English-speaking stage. Translated by Beverley Cross, the Guinness Book of World Records named it the most performed French comedy ever. Boeing, Boeing takes off with the outrageous lifestyle of an American ex-patriot named Bernhard living in Paris. He is the ultimate ladies man dating three airline stewardesses in the early 1960's at the peak of the Golden Age of air travel. His affairs seem to be intermingling well until the Boeing company develops faster airplanes that lead to a romantic nightmare of crossed schedules, near misses in the bedroom and riotous consequences. Kiyon Gaines' Sum Stravinsky was another immediate favorite when it debuted in PNB's 2012 ALL PREMIERE program. The Calling, a haunting work by choreographer Jessica Lang, artistic director of Jessica Lang Dance, receives its PNB season premiere, alongside a world premiere by PNB's own Price Suddarth. EMERGENCE runs for seven performances only, November 6 through 15 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Pacific Northwest Ballet to Finish Season with CARMINA BURANA, 5/29Pacific Northwest Ballet to Finish Season with CARMINA BURANA, 5/29
by BWW News Desk - Apr 22, 2015

SEATTLE, WA – PNB closes its 2014-2015 season with CARMINA BURANA, a dynamic duo of repertory works. Set to Shostakovich's galvanic score, Alexei Ratmansky's crowd-pleasing Concerto DSCH, an “endlessly suspenseful construction [with] passages of breathtaking dance brilliance” (New York Times) dazzles the eyes and ears with its playful, propulsive energy and glimpses of storytelling. In Kent Stowell's primal Carmina Burana, a grand-scale synthesis of dance, chorus, and orchestra, the famous cantata's poems materialize as the entire Company unites song and score for a jubilant communal experience under Carmina scenic designer Ming Cho Lee's colossal golden wheel. The program also includes a musical prelude to shine the spotlight on the world famous PNB Orchestra, currently celebrating its 25th Anniversary.  CARMINA BURANA runs for seven performances only, May 29 through June 7 at Seattle Center's Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.
