The 21 and older fundraising event is hosted for the fourth year in a row by the LA Derby Dolls. TWENTYWONDER is on Saturday, June 28 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Doll Factory (1910 West Temple Street) in Los Angeles. The evening features Social Distortion's Jonny Two Bags, Dengue Fever, Rudely Interrupted (from Australia), Lucha VaVOOM, LA Derby Dolls, The Lampshades, and much more. From an accordion fronted Tex-Mex punk band to socially conscious Haitian songs, and from ambient folk and electronica to the NYC debut of the king of Colombian vallenato and cumbia, the series travels the crossroads, the blurs and the beats of both traditional and contemporary sounds. Today in 2004, Assassins opened at Studio 54, where it ran for 101 performances. Assassins is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by John Weidman, based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr. It uses the premise of a murderous carnival game to produce a revue-style portrayal of men and women who attempted (successfully or otherwise) to assassinate Presidents of the United States. The music varies to reflect the popular music of the eras depicted.The musical first opened Off-Broadway in 1990, and the 2004 Broadway production won five Tony Awards. (more...)
