Twenty years ago, artist had a different meaning than it does now. Artists used to be so invested in their work that they often forgot to eat, sleep, or handle the normal routines of daily life. Nowadays, artists are more well-rounded than anything. Almost every high school theatre kid I meet also excels in academic subjects and other extracurriculars. Almost every college theatre major I meet has a dual major in something that older folks would consider more practical, like business or pre-law. This well-roundedness is fantastic, don't get me wrong. I consider myself one of the most well-rounded people, but when it comes to identifying as an artist, there should be more of a commitment to art than anything else.  (more...)

In The Artistic Home's production of Anton Chekhov's classic comedy of unrequited love and unrealized dreams, The Seagull, Company Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra (a Jeff Award nominee for The Artistic Home's Sweet Bird of Youth) plays the role of Madame Arkadina, the fading actress in love with a younger man, Trigorin. Scot West, previously seen at The Artistic Home in Watch on the Rhine, Interrogation and Miracle on 34th Street and in Griffin's Men Should Weep is the writer Trigorin. Brookelyn Hebert, of AH's Macbeth and Cut to the Chase, plays the young actress Nina, who is a rival to Arkadina for Trigorin's affections. Sydney Chamber Opera's New NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND to Premiere at Carriageworks

This August, Carriageworks presents Sydney Chamber Opera's (SCO) new production of composer Jack Symonds's and librettist Pierce Wilcox's Notes from Underground. Directed by Patrick Nolan and designed by Genevieve Blanchett it will be presented over five nights on 13, 15, 17, 19 and 20 August. The last time the company presented this opera it was for their 2011 inaugural production at Sydney's Cellblock Theatre. 1972: Dr. John Fryer dons an oversize tuxedo and rubber joke shop mask to become Dr. Henry Anonymous and confront the American Psychiatric Association with these words: 'I am a homosexual, I am a psychiatrist.' The latest work by renowned theatre artist Ain Gordon, 217 Boxes of Dr. Henry Anonymous, is a new play drawn from the 217 boxes of archive materials from national LGBT activist of Dr. John Fryer discovered by Ain Gordon during his two-year embedded artist status at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). This new work is set to run, May 5-7, at the Painted Bride Arts Center, 230 Vine Street. All performances are at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20.
