ARSENIC & OLD LACE Comes to St. Dunstan's Theatre in Bloomfield
by Stephi Wild - Jan 14, 2019

St. Dunstan's Theatre presents Joseph Kesselring's Arsenic and Old Lace. Filled with colorful characters and witty plot twists, this quirky comedy classic is one for the ages. Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life: he has a steady job as a drama critic at a prominent New York newspaper; he's just become engaged; and he gets to visit his sweet spinster aunts to announce the engagement. He always knew his once elite family bloodline had a bit of a mad gene (his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt). But his world gets turned upside down when he realizes his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years! At the same time, his long-lost homicidal brother, Jonathan, turns up with his phony plastic surgeon, Dr. Einstein. Mortimer is torn between covering up for his kin, wanting to marry the woman he loves, and maintaining his own sanity. An uproarious farce that results in a mix of laugh-out-loud hilarity and mayhem.

BWW Interview: Wild About Harry: MAMMA MIA's Robert O. Berdahl
by Kristen Hirsch Montag - Jul 31, 2018

There's something about summer entertainment -- light, frothy, happy shows that feel just like the season. A summer musical that takes place on a Greek island built around infectious tunes from the 1970s? Don't mind if I do... And a double dose in the same weekend? Sign me up! I hit up the Ordway's MAMMA MIA! on Friday night and then 'Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!' (the new film sequel) on Sunday night and had the tunes used in both stamped on my brain for two weeks straight. And I didn't mind a bit. MAMMA MIA! is hard not to love, which is likely why both the stage show and film were such mega hits, the former spawning a 'jukebox musical' wave of Broadway.

BWW Review: THE COLOR PURPLE at Connecticut Theatre Company
by Joseph Harrison - Jul 22, 2018

There is something glorious taking place at the Repertory Theatre in New Britain, Connecticut. The Connecticut Theatre Company is staging the very first community theater production of THE COLOR PURPLE, the hit Broadway musical with book by Marsha Norman and Music & Lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. Readers familiar with the beloved musical very likely may have the same initial reaction as this reviewer had - "A community theater production of THE COLOR PURPLE? Not sure how good that can be." Well, let me go on the record to say that this production by the Connecticut Theatre Company is absolutely breathtaking and does justice to every note, every scene and every heart-wrenching and beautifully written song in the musical. It is fresh and simple, and every bit as moving and life affirming as the original Broadway production (and its recent revival.)

Keen Company Announces 19th Season Including ORDINARY DAYS and SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY
by Stephi Wild - Jul 18, 2018

Today Keen Artistic Director Jonathan Silverstein announced his plans for the upcoming season: 'I am thrilled to announce Keen Company's 19th season, two uplifting stories about the big impact of small actions. This fall Keen will produce our fourth intimate musical, the first NY revival of Adam Gwon's Ordinary Days. I've been a fan of Adam's work for years and am so excited to work with him to bring this beloved musical to life in a brand new production with new orchestrations. Ordinary Days beautifully depicts the search for connection and how one person's actions can influence complete strangers. In the spring we will present the New York premiere of Surely Goodness and Mercy, a truly Keen story about an exceptional boy living a troubled life in Newark, NJ who does a good deed for an often unnoticed person. Chisa is a rare writer who speaks to our complicated times today with a full heart and a singular voice. I am thrilled to welcome her into the Keen family,' said Silverstein.

BWW Review: ABT's DON QUIXOTE, a Tidbit of a Tale That's Chock Full of Festive Dancing
by Sondra Forsyth - Jun 27, 2018

American Ballet Theatre's claim that the ballet Don Quixote is ”based on Miguel de Cervantes' sweeping tale of romance and chivalry” is a forgivable exaggeration. Cervantes' lengthy two-part novel does have a mention of the romantic triangle with Quiteria (called Kitri in the ballet), Basilio (the boy-next-door she eventually marries), and Camacho (the bumbling rich man her father wanted her to marry, called Gamache in the ballet).

In the years before computers and cell phones to assist Bernard with scheduling, he uses a datebook and the world globe sitting on his desk to keep track of where each of the three stewardesses he plans to marry will be travelling, and has managed to keep 'one up, one down and one pending.' But Bernard's life is about to get incredibly bumpy when his friend, Robert (pratfall expert Brian O'Sullivan), comes to stay and unexpected schedule changes bring all three women to Paris and Bernard's apartment at the same time. And with Robert meeting all these lovely ladies for the first time on the same day, he soon forgets which lies to tell to whom to keep Bernard out of the doghouse. Hilarity ensues!
