The final production of East West Players’ 57th Season, the Tony Award winning musical Spring Awakening opens October 29, 2023 (with previews already begun). Former EWP Artistic Director Tim Dang directs the cast of Mia Sempertegui, Thomas K. Winter, Marcus Phillips, Madison Grepo, Tamlyn Tomita, Daniel Blinkoff, Jaylen Baham, James Everts, Genki Hall, Sarah Marie Hernandez, Justine Rafael, Eric Renna and Leianna Weaver. What did our critic think of THE PROM at Theatre Three?

Baker’s superb direction brings all the various moving parts of this huge production together to deliver a gratifyingly heartfelt paean to the millions of working women (and men) who inspired the screenplay and musical book by Patricia Resnick. Baker’s vision for the piece, in concert with her team of collaborators, delivers a production of 9 to 5: The Musical that is delightfully fresh and new, eschewing the tendency of some directors to offer a rehash of what’s already been seen on Broadway, on tour or in regional theater.

Acclaimed Black Filipinx playwright and Kilroys List honoree Roger Q. Mason will present a reading of their play Hide and Hide with the Los Angeles Performance Practice as part of their 2023 Live Arts Exchange Festival on Friday, October 20 at 8pm.

The term “fairy” either conjures up a vision of a well-loved, winged, Tinkerbell-like, character or an unspoken derogatory term for a man from the gay community.  There is no middle ground.  It is black or white.  But in the 1980's times were different. Perhaps some people even took ownership of the title.  This was a time when the words “gay” and “father” were never used together, and a time when no one yet knew if that might, someday, become possible.
