Mr. Griffey has withdrawn for health reasons. The 90-minute opera, commissioned by HGO from composer Iain Bell and librettist Simon Callow, is written for a single singer performing the role of The Narrator. Devasting news to the fashion world: Oscar de la Renta has passed away at 82. This comes just after Peter Copping was named Creative Director of the fashion house but de la Renta was to maintain a very active role. De la Renta told WWD, 'I'm very happy Peter has agreed to join us. He is a great talent and along with our shared design sensibilities, we both have a deep curiosity about the wider world, from music and art to architecture and gardens. Our industry has not always done the best job when it comes to changes in design leadership. My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand.' (more...)

Discover the evolving genius and unique musical voices of “Beethoven, Debussy and Mendelssohn” during the first concert of Pacific Symphony's 2014-15 Café Ludwig chamber series, which this season explores music written at the early, middle and late periods of a composer's life. As an anchor, the three-concert series features three of Beethoven's cello sonatas, each written at a different stage of his musical development, performed by the Symphony's Principal Cellist Timothy Landauer. For the seventh season, charming and sensational pianist Orli Shaham serves as host, leading this afternoon of music on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. in the intimate Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Tickets are $56 and $73, and include coffee, tea and desserts. Subscriptions for all three concerts are still available for $168 and $219. No one does Shakespeare like Ten Thousand Things. They manage to boil the text down to its bare essentials, and convey the heart of the story in a way that feels fresh and modern. This season they bring their unique Shakespeare style to perhaps his most well-know play, the story of star-crossed lovers that inspired all others, Romeo and Juliet. In the typically minimalist production (since TTT performs on location at prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers, the paid public performances are also in a small, fully lit room with little in the way of sets and costumes), director Peter Rothstein and his fantastic cast of eight playing multiple characters bring this familiar story to life in a unique way. New York cabaret audiences have for years been blessed with extremely entertaining performing marrieds like John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molasky, Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano, and Michael Garin and Mardie Millett. But after experiencing the thoroughly enchanting October 8 performance from Amanda McBroom and her husband George Ball at 54 Below (there was a second performance on October 14), it's difficult to imagine a cabaret couple more compelling.
