The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) and Broadway in Columbus (BIC) today announced the 2017-18 PNC Broadway in Columbus season. The five-show season, supported in part by PNC, features three productions never before seen in Columbus including School of Rock, Waitress, and An American in Paris. The 2017-18 season also includes the 2015 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production of Rodger's & Hammerstein's The King and I and Chicago starring Ohio State football superstar Eddie George. Composer Robert Sirota Continues 'Bridging the Gap' Series at National Sawdust

Composer Robert Sirota is curating a new season-long series at National Sawdust (80 N 6th St). Titled Bridging the Gap, the series features concerts of chamber, choral, and solo works which Sirota has crafted to explore the student/teacher, mentor/mentee relationships between generations of composers. The concerts, all held on Sundays, include performances of works by both younger composers and the teachers who have influenced their development. Each concert is preceded by a discussion with composer mentors, mentees, and performers, led by a distinguished thought leader. (more...)

The writings of Walter Benjamin, the influential German Jewish philosopher and cultural critic, are the basis for a contemporary art exhibition at the Jewish Museum on view through August 6, 2017. The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin examines themes in the author's magnum opus The Arcades Project via contemporary artworks in media ranging from photography and video to sculpture and painting, with annotations by the American poet Kenneth Goldsmith.   (more...)

Hauser & Wirth Presents US Debut of New Works By Roni Horn, 4/27

Beginning 27 April 2017, Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present the US debut of four new bodies of work by acclaimed American artist Roni Horn. The exhibition features the photographic opus 'The Selected Gifts (1974 – 2015)', a collection of 67 photographs documenting the history of gifts the artist received over a period of 41 years. Also on view are two new bodies of works on paper, The Dog's Chorus (2016) – shown here for the first time – and Th Rose Prblm (2015), as well as the new glass sculptures 'Water Double, v. 1' and 'Water Double, v. 3' (both 2013 – 2015). Although materially divergent, these works all derive from longstanding questions and themes that have propelled Horn's practice and her ongoing poetic study of the protean nature of identity, meaning, and perception. Dinu Lipatti presents 100th Anniversary Concert 4/27 at Benaroya Hall

The American Romanian Cultural Society (ARCS) pays homage to one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century: Romanian born Dinu Lipatti.  On April 27, 2017 at 7pm Benaroya Hall's acoustically rich Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall hosts this very special 100th anniversary musical celebration. Lipatti fulfilled a startling variety of roles - pianist, composer, teacher and critic -before his untimely death from cancer at age 33. Posthumously elected to the Romanian Academy, Lipatti brought outstanding contributions to classical music interpretation and composition. His pianism demonstrated an ideal synthesis of a composer's analytical insight and expressive inwardness. Internationally acclaimed violinist and pianist Alexandru Tomescu (violin) and Angela Draghicescu (piano) pay tribute to Dinu Lipatti in an exquisite chamber concert featuring works by Beethoven, Bach, Bartok and Gershwin as well as the Seattle premiere of Dinu Lipatti's rarely performed Sonatina for Violin and Piano. Music Director Alan Gilbert begins his final weeks by leading the New York Philharmonic in Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The program juxtaposes the tragedy and optimism of human experience through Schoenberg's depiction of the horror of the Holocaust and the message of hope, brotherhood, and joy in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw will feature Gabriel Ebert as narrator (in his Philharmonic debut) and the men of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, directed by Joe Miller. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will feature soprano Camilla Tilling, mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack (debut), tenor Joseph Kaiser (debut), bass-baritone Eric Owens, and the Westminster Symphonic Choir, directed by Joe Miller. The performances will take place Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 6 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. The program will be presented without intermission.
