The Steve Silver Foundation and BEACH BLANKET BABYLON Announce Winners of 2017 Scholarship for the Arts

Last night, Jo Schuman Silver-producer of Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon-announced the three Bay Area high school winners of the 15th Anniversary of The Steve Silver Foundation & Beach Blanket Babylon "Scholarship for the Arts."

Out of the nine finalists who performed in the live competition at Club Fugazi, Yongfeng Lim (Dance) from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose - performing "Human," Peter Stielstra (Acting) from Lowell High School in San Francisco - performing a monologue from 1969 or Howie Takes A Trip by Tina Landau, and Emilie Kealani Suarez (Voice) from Independence High School in San Francisco - performing "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Gianni Schicchi, each walked away with $15,000 towards their college education.

The celebrity panel of judges included: choreographer Val Caniparoli, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman, actor, playwright, and KGO Radio's Brian Copeland, American political satirist Will Durst, composer and philanthropist Gordon Getty, SFJAZZ Center's Founder and Executive Artistic Director Randall Kline, Resident Choreographer for Hamilton Derek Mitchell, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts' Chief of Civic Engagement Jonathan Moscone, American Conservatory Theater's Artistic Director Carey Perloff, San Francisco Opera's General Director Matthew Shilvock, KCBS AM & FM's Jan Wahl, and jazz and cabaret singer Paula West. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was radio legend, Don Bleu.

Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon has a long-standing commitment to philanthropic efforts in the community and has been involved with numerous charities and organizations including UCSF Cancer Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Child Abuse Prevention Society, AIDS Emergency Fund, Delancey Street Foundation and Meals On Wheels San Francisco, among others.
